How to help my boyfriend?

Hi there. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

My boyfriend is very very depressed and suicidal and has been for a good while now. It's just got to a point where I have no idea what to do. The thing is he smokes a lot of weed and has done he says everyday for about 3 years. It's only been for the past few months that when he doesn't get a smoke he gets really depressed and angry and suicidal and hits things and hurts himself, it's scary. Before when he was sober he was fine, it's just recently his health has been seriously declining. Lack of money has to do with him being sad. He doesn't have a job yet he won't go on job seekers. He refuses to go to the doctors. I've spoke to his mum about it too, we don't know what to do. Totally at my wits end as I love him more than anything.

It doesn't sound like nothing, and I'm sorry you haven't had any replies to this.

It sounds like a really tough situation, especially if he is unwilling to speak to a doctor. It sounds like his marijuana addiction is contributing to his poor mental health. Do you think he can see that link at all? If he can begin to realise that drugs are only a short term way of coping and actually make things worse in the long run, he might be more motivated to seek help. It might also be worth suggesting alternatives to the GP; for example the Samaritans, local drug support charities and helplines.

I know you won't want him to worry or feel guilty but I do think you should explain how scared and concerned you feel. Perhaps encouraging him to accept benefits might also take some of the pressure off, especially if you do it together as a couple. Aside from that, I guess the key things are to keep communicating honestly with each other and make sure that your relationship is more than mental health. Try and share enjoyable things together, like going to the movies or cooking together each evening. Keeping normality is often really helpful in itself. And, of course, be kind to yourself too and make sure you have something just for you that can help you relax and cope safely with all this. I hope things pick up soon

How is your partner doing now? I can't add much to what Epicene said, but I do think it's very important to talk to him about this, and I hope that helps.

It doesn't matter where you come from; it matters where you go.
No-one gets remembered for the things they didn't do.
We won't all be here this time next year,
so while you can take a picture of us.
We're definitely going to hell,
but we'll have all the best stories to tell.
