Access to HE
Hey :)
Im just wondering if anyone here has done the access to HE nursing and midwifery course and can tell me a bit about what the course is about as in what modules there are etc.
Also i looked online and there was a mock exam paper for it and there was a whole section for multiplying numbers and this is going to make me sound really thick but i dont know how to multiply numbers that well, is that something they would teach on the course?
any help would be muchly appreciated :) x

A friend of mine did Access to Paramedicine. There is 'basic' maths and english is most access courses - the idea is you have a solid foundation when you study your degree (and really helps to prepare candidates for their chosen field more than alevels). They usually do maths, english/communication, and then the core content (I'm guessing medical stuff). There's sometimes a module breakdown on the websites.

It doesn't matter where you come from; it matters where you go.
No-one gets remembered for the things they didn't do. We won't all be here this time next year,
so while you can take a picture of us. We're definitely going to hell,
but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

I did Access to HE- Social Studies in 2010/11 and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Yes there is a maths and english component to Access courses. On my course we all had a quick assessment to see what level we were at, and those needing more help had maths and english classes. I think it's roughly GCSE level they bring you up to as that is what's needed on a degree really. I didn't need the maths/english classes though so I don't know what they were like. But remember they are designed for adults who've been out of the classroom for years so they will ease you in very gently don't worry!
As Sophia said, with access courses you have the core modules in english/communication, maths and IT and then alongside those you have the ones that are more specialised to your course. I'd imagine you might have modules in human biology, social studies, possibly psychology etc. You'll also have a module or two regarding researching universities and degrees and applying through UCAS.
Can you find the website of the college you're studying at and look up your course to see the modules? Or give them a ring? Otherwise I'm sure when you enrol they'll explain more and give you your timetable.
Not all access courses have exams. Mine had none, it was 100% coursework based.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…
you once called your brain a hard drive, well say hello to the virus.

I did an access course in 2012-2013. I LOVED it!
What you study depends on where you choose to study. My subjects were psychology, sociology, biology, study skills, ICT and maths in a nursing context.
You have to have a GCSE maths and English C or above to get into most universities and a few of my friends on the course did the maths GCSE whilst doing the access course so it is possible.
Although, my friend at work did an access course and studied maths, English and biology so each course is different.
So worth it though, I got into all three of my university choices and I would not have done it without having done the maths refresher!!

I'm doing an online access to nursing course. The company I'm doing it with aren't great, but it's going okay. It's pretty tough though.
The modules I'm doing are: Biology, research methods and statistics, adolescence adulthood and old age, social interaction, social conflict, communications, IT, and psychopathology.
