Mixed state...Feeling strange *update going IP*

I am feeling so strange, like my senses are heightened, everything is moving really fast, my mind, things around me, and I see them moving, like really SEE them moving, when I look at my fingers typing or my hand moving I can see the after images, where objects were a second ago. I feel like I could do anything and I'm so inspired but so restless I can't seem to focus on anything for very long so I jum from thing to thing but end up cleaning or reorganising or staring t a wall. then the wall seems to morph so i move faster and clean or organise. I don't know what to do and I keep thinking about my blood because I am sick and I feel like i need to bleed.

I don't know what to do with myself or how to keep myself safe I've got so much energy, some of it productive but then I get overwhelming urges to get rid of the blood in me that is making me sick, it was put there, i don't want it inside me but.... I think and i hate it but my mind is going mental with crazy fast throughts and ideas and I have taken all my meds and I'm so not tired and do not want to sleep. I want to paint and draw and write but most of all I want this sickness out of my body

Is there anyone you could call?
Do you have a care team?
Do you have any PRN meds you could take to calm you down?
Could you go to a&e?

Thank you Ballerina

I live with my partner but can't wake her, she really needs the sleep, she has bipolar and bad sleep is a trigger for her mania. i have been awake for 20 hours. seeing things move that didnt used to and all random thoughts spining through my head

I'm seeing my psychiatrist for last session after 10 years tomorrow and transitioning to another who i won't see for over a week. so the psych i am transitioning from wont be able to do much.

I couldnt make myself go to a and e, I'm trying to keep it together and distract. It's 5:17 and i haven't slept, ha - getting myself to my appointment will be fun fun fun

Weren't you in hospital , how are you now? you obviously need to sleep and that's why you mind is playing tricks on you.

It became like a sort of prison. Encased in a silver shell, words so full of bleeding need spilled like drops on dry leaves. And all the while laughter prevailed a long way from here. Nowhere land, nowhere time, nowhere space.

Have you tried prn? Try deep breathing and relaxing? Watching tv, or reading a book? Chatting online helps me a lot to take my mind off thoughts.

I've been taking PRNs but they aren't helping. I have been doing deep breathing excercises but they aren't working either and neither are distratctions I just don't have the focus, I lose concentration and start something new. I feel fantastic and terrible at the same time, it's so confusing. I only got two hours broken sleep last nght and I'm so damn agitated I want to claw at my arms. I really don't know what to do and I'm so tired but cannot sleep or think straight.

I haven't seen anyone that can actually DO anything or suggest anything to help since the 30th of March. My Dr who I will never see again said it was a mixed episode and to be careful.
I'm feeling really out of sorts and dont know who to turn to as my partner needs to stay together for work or else we lose our place. I was standing at the balcony loooking over at the road works and for a few minutes I thought I was going to jump

Mixed state - bipolar and schizoaffective -what is your experience and how do you deal with it?

I'm apparently experiencing a mixed state at the moment and I feel very vulerable and unsafe. I have no idea what to do with this restless energy, or distressing racing thoughts and moments of suicidality, it all feels out of control.

How do you experience mixed states and what do you find that helps?

I have the same diagnosis as you and I experience mixed states. My symptoms are very similar to yours plus I get suicidal.

I have found that CBT, self help books and medication have helped me a lot.
I take lamotragine, olanzapine, lithium and propanolol.

I also find getting a lot of rest/sleep is helpful. I usually take clonazapam but when I'm in an episode I get sleeping pills prescriber too.
Sometimes getting few good night's sleep can really calm you.

Do some calming things like having a bath and painting to keep your mind calm.

Sorry your going through this. I think that mixed states are the worst because they are so chaotic and exhausting.

PM me if you wanna chat x

Thank you very much Ballerina,

Your suggestions are really helpful.I've started to have suicidal ideation too.
I am working through my CBT books so very slowly as I cannot concentrate for the life of me. I'm only on Chlorpromazine/LArgactal 400mg and I don't think it is helping.
I am so unable to sleep. I got so little last night an feel like it was worse than getting none at all. I have been on sleeping tablets (zopliclone) but my scipt has run out and don't see my Dr for a while, same with my serepax. So I feel pretty... under medicated. though i go from believing i don't need them to really needing them to get through the day.
A bath might help but we don't have one in our apartment and Ialso have an ED which makes it hard for me to see my body. I could paint if i were very careful as we are all carpet here.

I agree that mixed states are the worst, my Dr said they are the most dangerous for me. Thank you very much.

Have you thought about ringing your team and getting an emergency appointment or going a&e and asking to be referred to home treatment/crisis team x

I'm diagnosed with bipolar type 1 (mixed). To be honest when I'm in a mixed state, the only thing that helps me is strong medication and hospital. Well, hospital doesn't help as such, but having access to the PRN medication does.

Ballerina is right sleep is really important, I find the less I sleep the worse I get, it becomes a vicious circle.

If things are really desperate, could you go to a&e? If you think you will act on these thoughts and jump off the balcony then it may be the best way to access help quickly. Maybe the meds you are on need to be reviewed, especially if you've tried prn and it has not worked. It sounds like you are trying really hard to manage this difficult time by yourself which is great but sometimes we all need a bit of extra help and support.

This is good advice. I would say go to a&e. It's the best place when your in crisis because you can have a psych assessment in hours. They may even prescribe some PRN.

try a hot shower to calm you and keep practicing the deep breathing. Rest rest rest... rest as much as you can and be kind to yourself x

Thanks Secret squirrel,
I am holding up at the moment, but that's mainly for the sake of my partner who is struggling a lot today, she is going back to work on Tuesday and it is causing her a lot of anxiety and anger/agitation. It's impacting me quite a lot and I don't know what to do about it, in terms of helping her or myself right now.

I'm super hypervigilant, loud noises are really bothering me, I'm feeling impulsive and just really scattered and all over the place and have absolutely no clue what to do. I really want to avoid A&E if I can help it because I don't see much they can do aside from admit me which I really don't want and I don't think they would do anything with my medication as I am under a psychiatrist privately.

Kate,
I had a shower which sort of helped but triggered a bit of ED stuff.
I've taken valium for the first time in a while and it hasn;t helped either which means in about 15 minutes I'll be on the wine.

I really want to help my partner but she says there isn't anything I can do and I don't want to get in her space and make her feel uncomfortable, nor do I want her getting angry with me because I don't respond well and I think it will make everything worse. Feeling stuck!!!

Thanks Kate, unfortunately I don't have access to a crisis team as my psychiatrist is private so he is really the only support i have in that capacity and the earliest appointment I can get is the 6th, I haven't seen him in months and he is a new Dr for me.

Wellingtons,
I can relate, the times I've been like this i have ended upin hospital but that isn't an option for me at the moment and I think I'd end up fighting it because I already feel so trapped in my own body tht being trapped in a hospital would make it worse, though the option isn't there now...

I only got a couple of hours broken sleep last night and had terrible nightmares so getting rest is turning out to be a challenge.
