Antipsychotics and disordered thinking

I have schizoaffective disorder but mist of my symptoms are those of schizophrenia, aside from some episodes of mania.

I was wondering if anyone found antipsychotics helpful for "formal thought disorder"

My thinking can get really strange along with my speech. I tend not to notice when my speech doesn't make sense if I am really not well but sometimes when I am slightly more lucid I talk as little as possible because when I do speak I often can't get the words I'm thinking, or trying to think to come out how I mean them to.

I have this issue when I get really unwell. Like you, I don't really notice it then. Olanzapine has pretty much sorted it out for me, and I only suffer when I'm going through a particularly stressful period.

Thanks for responding Aubergine.
I'm on Chlorpromazine, and it helps a bit during the first half of the day but after 3 and peaking at 7/8/9 all of my symptoms get worse according to my partner.
She believes I am still not on the right dosage.

My Dr said I'm on a fairly average dose at the moment and we can increase it. He also said we could add in a regular midday rather than just upping the night time, I'm wondering if that would help.

What is ordered thinking? I tend t have obsessive thoughts which reoccur and I think about them in rotation along with whatever I am currently doing at the given time. I want to stop them but the only time this happens is what I am sedated. then I have am not able to study or do anything. Why do we feel we have to 'fix' ourselves all the time. We are told as patients that we are broken and need to do this and that. I don't have any answers anymore. If you feel your thoughts are distressing you then it is a problem alright. I get agitated in the night time and have been given lyrica as prn which is not as helpful as a benzo. Maybe you could ask for something to take in the evening? Hope you are doing well out of hospital.

Obsessive an intrusive thoughts aren't formal thought disorders. If you google 'schizophrenia formal thought disorder' you know what I mean.
