Just need to say this

I went to my friends party which I had been looking forward to all month. He always has these really awesome parties that are always really fun. This year it was in the cabin with a hot tub so we were all told to bring bathing suits. I was getting ready I had this awesome little outfit when my roommate sees me and says that my leg looked really bad and if she was me she wouldn't dare wear shorts. A few of my friends know that I cut I'm in the process of getting help and quitting it's just been a hard process for me. The last time I cut myself was right before Thanksgiving so not all the scares are fully heal but they arent that bad. But her comment made me go back into this ball of insecurity.So I sat on the couch the whole party while everyone was out at the hot tub and lied and told everyone I just wasnt feeling well.
I'm just curious how does everyone else handles the scares or what they would have done. I'm just tired of not letting myself wear shorts or going swimming 'cause I'm to scared what people will say, like my roommate.

I'm sorry your friend said that and that it made you feel so bad.

Unfortunately people who don't live with the scars and who haven't SH'd don't understand how hurtful comments like that can be.

Personally, I have kind of gotten past the point of being worried about most of my scars, except one which was my deepest and worst...for the most part I wear short sleeves and tell anyone who comments yo mind their own business. I can understand of course that that takes a certain amount of courage to begin with but I feel so much better now I let myself wear short sleeves.

You shouldn't have to feel bad about yourself...you're getting help and trying to quit and that's the main thing. That's what you need to concentrate on and be proud of.

Could you maybe speak to this friend and let her know how her comment made you feel.

No matter what you've done to yourself in the past you deserve to enjoy yourself...plus, once you were in the hot tub it's doubtful anyone would be able to see the scars.

Be kind to yourself.

i kept my scars hidden until they were really well healed, so i don't personally have experience with this… i can understand how hurt and insecure you must feel though, i would have wanted to just curl up in a ball and hide for a really long time if someone said that to me. i don't think that you have to explain to her, but it might be a good idea, especially if you generally get along well (if you don't, i'd avoid bringing it up again, as she might end up saying something else that is upsetting)

I'm sorry she made you feel that way about your scars.
I used to be incredibly self conscious about my scars, but I'm more confident now and if people ask about my scars then I will tell them the truth (or tell them I was attacked by an aardvark, depends what kind of mood I'm in!)

Do any of your friends know that you self harm?
