TBI

I have a Traumatic Brain Injury. This injury causes me to have short term memory. Having Short Term Memory makes it difficult to heal to heal from my past or present issues because I do not remember but, the emotional and subconscious mind, remembers. I am left with the urge to SH a lot and I live in a numb state. This numb state makes it so I do not get hurt easy but, I do not experience emotions easily and most of what I feel is anger or mistrust. I don't know anyone else who suffers from a TBI as well. I have had a TBI for 5 years.

I don't have TBI either but wanted to let you know I read and that I care. I am sorry your finding things so difficult at the moment. Do you have any supports helping you get through this? I am not sure if this is a silly suggestion or not but would it help to write down things like in a journal? That way it could help you remember more.

I don't have TBI but have some sort of dissociative amnesia/just quite poor memory and therefore don't remember a lot of my life events either. Like you, I still hold those memories in an emotional/unconscious/bodily way. I thought for a long time that I had to be able to remember things in order to process them by talking about them. I have since discovered that skilled therapists can help you to come to terms with things without having to have a narrative about the events. Sometimes this comes from being able to talk about things that you're feeling and experiencing 'in the moment'.

Do you keep diaries much? Sometimes it helps me to write about how I'm feeling at the present time and go back to it later (when I am likely to have forgotten). Art or music can also be an outlet and a form of journalling how you are from one moment to the next (if you are able to record the music). You could also keep video diaries. (I'm sorry, I don't know much about TBI and am not sure if it would be possible for you).

Hi OP, just curious, who was it who told you that you have short term memory? Your doctor? I'm just wondering.

Hello, I don't have a brain injury as such but I have a condition which affects my brain and central nervous system, I also suffer with my memory a little as a result. Do you have any support workers? x

I had a traumatic brain injury back in 2009. Most of my memory has come back now though immediately afterwards it was terrible.
Maybe it would help to read things that you wrote back then? I mean your rants and posts here for example.
That might help you to piece it all together again.

I don't have TBI either, but the journal suggestion would be a good one I would think. Do you have medical support through this?
