No. It would create more work for them and would make most people incredibly uncomfortable anyway. Problems that occur via pm or whispers can be reported. I don't see how any benefits could outweigh the problems.

No thanks!

Well, it'd make me awfully paranoid for a start... :P

It doesn't matter where you come from; it matters where you go.
No-one gets remembered for the things they didn't do.
We won't all be here this time next year,
so while you can take a picture of us.
We're definitely going to hell,
but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

I know what you mean, My opinion is that we shouldn't be able to read PM's and whispers because it would create extra work for us, also i guess some things do need to stay private. I made this thread because people keep asking me in chat if i can read their PM's :P

I've always operated under the assumption that anything can be seen. Rules are fine but you can get a hostile mod or hacker of some kind who ignores rules. I've seen RYL accounts hacked and I've seen staff go sketchy . Maybe from the government will hack you these days lol. My rule is a person's granny should be able to read PMs etc.

I'd prefer no one read my personal thoughts, unless I deem it appropriate.

I don't think so.
Along with the extra work for mods (which is really not needed!)
If people do have a problem over pm's or whatever, they can report it. So there's no need really!

I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

Quite - and it's something that people often forget. Rule 1 of the internet, everything is viewable. Rule 2, everything is traceable. Rule 3, nothing is ever deleted for good.

On the topic of this thread, I don't think there's any clear benefit of mods reading private messages - if somebody wants to report something, they can do so easily enough. Cost/benefit - it'd add far more work, both in building a structure to monitor it and in maintaining it - without having any clear purpose. Welcome to hear other opinions though.

There are people that can read PMs, although whispers in chat I dont know.

It would make chat very messy to work with if everyones PMs were viewable and there has never really been a need to read peoples PMs. If someone rule breaks via whisper its usually reported if there is a rule break.

I dont know if its because Im just uninterested in peoples lives but it wouldnt really interest me being able to see it.Cant imagine the fall out it would cause if a mod went rogue too.

No, they're called private messages for a reason...

AND from being a chat mod I can understand that mods want to ensure that no flaming or anything like that is being discussed, but people want their privacy too.

I know I wouldn't like it (ex mod or not) if a mod was watching me have a private conversation with someone about my issues and such.

I don't think it would be appropriate.

As already mentioned, if there's an issue people can always copy & paste to the chat mods or if it's PM's to the forum mods.

i dont think any mods or anyone like that should be able to see pms unless someone reports it.. because people feel more comfortable when they know theres only one person and not all the world will know.. same for chat its between the two people not everyone else... i think it says alot about someone being able to trust someone when they open a pm or private chat why would you go and ruin this by allowing mods to be able to see :)

each person brings something new to the world.. all i bring is my smile and thats all i need

It bothers me not in the slightest, in fact being the site it is and what its about i think its more good being careful keeping a watch on things , people such as me with mh problems have a tendency to lose sight of the fact that not everyones to be trusted and sometimes its hard to know who to trust with well meaning advice.
