Domestic violence/abuse adverts. (Poss triggering?)

Just wondering if anyone else has seen the domestic violence advert that has been on tv recently? Has two teenagers in it. There is also a rape one in the same style.

For me its really horrible to see something like that while i'm trying to relax and watch tv, it actually makes me feel sick and start to shake and brings back horrible memories every time :(

I mean it must be a good thing to raise awareness I guess? But I just hate the effect it has on me.

I have seen quite a few adverts as well regarding domestic violence and rape. Like you, it affects me quite badly and I end up feeling awful after seeing it.

I agree with you that it is good to raise awareness, it is just difficult for us to see.

Does anything help you after having seen them to calm yourself down? I know it's a bit of pain but would it help to put the TV on mute throughout adverts and so at least you don't have to hear what is going on.

If i'm on my own i'll just change the channel, but if i'm with somebody else I can't do anything (especially if its not my tv). People would probably understand if I asked but I don't fancy explaining myself everytime the advert comes on :(

I've seen some really serious UK commercials on those subjects, and have heard from many over there how disturbed they are. Perhaps along with dealing with the thing on your own, write a letter to the ad agency or organization that puts these out. Explain to them that you understand the need for awareness, but how it's often triggering for those who have experienced it.

I have also been having these feelings about these adverts recently. I even had one of my friends who knew I was watching the same thing as her text me and ask if I was okay after it. I do get quite triggered by it.

Unfortunately, it appears that more and more now raising awarenes means really shoving it into people's faces and showing things quite graffically.

I agree that it might be an idea to write to the people who put it out there - though at the moment I can't think who it is. Or maybe emailing them?

I know it's hard to explain to someone when you're at theirs watching TV but perhaps you could come up with someway of blocking it out - start talking over it or leave the room to get a drink or something if it's really bad? I know you shouldn't have to do that at all but just thinking it might help?

I think writing an email/letter is a very good idea. I will try to write one up tomorrow. I have nothing against them raising awareness I just think it could be done in a different/better way.
I do try and distract myself when the advert comes on but it is still quite difficult.

Hi. I've just seen the advert for the first time tonight. I had a lovely evening and was just about to go to bed when it came on - it took me completely by suprise but I found it so upsetting. I started shaking and feel so upset. It's brought back so many memories. I've been vomitting and want to cut. I think it's properly irresponsible to put such a graphic advert on tv, there's no need for it.
