Doctors

So i made an appointment for Wednesday with a doctor because i have been feeling so down and suicidal recently. But i have no idea what to say!

Im really shy, last time i wrote down how i was feeling, but now that just makes me feel pathetic surely i should be able to talk for myself. Im sure its my own fault for letting myself get like this in the first place.

Any ideas how i can get across what im trying to say without making myself look a complete idiot!

Thanks

try writing a list (just in bullet points) and practice talking about them out loud while you're on your own...

Firstly, well done for making the appointment. That's really brilliant.

As for talking, you can always take the list of bullet points, as Katie suggested, and give them to your doctor if you do feel unable to talk. If you do want to talk, practise what you need to say and you could read the bullet points out, so that you are talking.

Lots of people use writing as a way of expressing how they feel. I have taken pieces of writing to professionals before and I have emailed them and they always appreciate it. They want you to try, they don't care how you do that, as long as it gets you the support you need and deserve.

Take care.

I just wanted to say that I understand how you feel about having to write things down in order to talk to the doctor, (in fact I just went through a similar situation at an appointment a few days ago) but even though you may feel silly doing it, there is really no reason to. I'm beginning to think it's much more common than I would have originally believed anyway.
I think it's more convenient actually, that way you don't forget anything that you'll probably regretfully remember on the way home, and the doctor won't have to play fifty questions to figure out what you're struggling with if your mind goes completely blank. I've had to write something up every single time I've gone back to a doctor. I think it can also help you feel less stressed about the appointment, since its a way to prepare.

Anyway, I just wanted to add my own "you're not alone" comment. I know it can feel silly, but it doesn't make you appear like an idiot at all. Nor does it indicate at all that you're pathetic.

You can always pm me, if you want to talk.

just be honest.. writing stuff down is a fab idea... have you got a close friend that can go with you and maybe do a little talking for you
i went to the doctors with a friend she did the talking as i cudnt!! i wasnt in a gud place and it helped so much and felt able to go back in two days by myself, i couldnt open up stright away but it was a starting point.
all the best xx

I think writing things down is sometimes for the best, its easy to get distracted on a point and not have enough time to talk about everything you want to. I have written lists/letters before and found them very helpful.
Good luck for your appointment, I hope all goes well. Let us know how things go.

Good luck with it tomorrow. Try to get a good night's sleep (easier said than done, I know!) and not to worry about it too much. I'm sure it will go okay and you can let us know once it's done, yeah?
