I am on an injection too and trust me when I say it hurts less the more you have it. I used to be sore for days, whereas because my body has got used to it I have very little pain (just some the next day and that's it). The more you put it off the less chance your body will get used to it and the more it will hurt. Also they will force you if necessary to take it, so it's best that you at least show up for your appointments rather than them chasing you.
Also I hate needles too (I nearly fainted the first time I had it! I also had to lie down for 40 mins because I got so anxious I felt so dizzy and unstable on my feet), but again the more you have them the more you get used to it. Trust me 6 months later you wont be phased by them and you will see as nothing but a waste of 5 mins! You're actually lucky having it once a month, I have mine every 2 weeks.
If they see that you are compliant with taking the injection (that means turning up to every appointment) then you can discuss having Risperidal (or any other antipsychotic) as tablets after a while. Injections are usually reserved (though not in all cases) for people who arent compliant with meds. The more you refuse meds the more the case you will need injections.
Also meds arent an admission of failure, if that's what you're thinking. Plenty of people here need meds in order to survive and live a normal life. You wouldnt tell a diabetic to stop taking insulin, so why should mh problems to be any different?
