Lipstick and Lip Liner

I'm a lip gloss girl but have decided it's time to take the plunge and try to wear actual lipstick. I've ordered one that is kind of pinky-brown so not too bright.

Couple questions:

- I've decided to put it on with a brush as my lips are quite thin and I always go over the edge when just putting it straight on. Any tips for this? Does the brush get all gunky and need washing every time you use it?

- Is lip liner necessary? What kind of colour should it be? I have a light pink one someone gave me, is this ok? How are you supposed to use it?

Personally I dont use lipliner so I cant really help!x

Just wipe the brush after use. (: give it a wash every now and again though

Lip liner is useful. It helps the lipstick stay on longer and fade evenly so you don't get that ring around your mouth as it fades because us giving the lipstick something to stick too. It also stops te lipstick 'bleeding' around your lips and go on to your skin.

Does it matter if it's not the same colour as the lipstick?

Disclaimer: I have actually searched the internet for this and read numerous "how to's", I'm just after some more personal tips and opinions as the internet ones can vary lots and you never know who's actually writing them...

I think a shade lighter or similar to your lipstick colour. If you get a different colour to your lipstick it will alter the colour of the lipstick, especially if you get a darker lip liner.

I bought purple glitter lip gloss tody for 50 cent! Which does nothing to help you, but anyway. I've never used lip liner personally, it hasn't bothered me. I usually put a clear lip gloss over lipstick, is that ok to do? Or I just use a coloured one.

It's absolutely fine to do that. Just be careful using a clear lipgloss over strongly coloured lipsticks (pinks, reds, oranges etc) as it can stain the brush and affect your lipgloss with the colour pigmentation.

I swear by lip liners though. I have full lips so when lipsticks are fading I get the ring around the edges of my mouth, so using a lip liner it helps it fade slowly and evenly and solves the problem for me.

I have very thin lips. Would you recommend lip liner? I guess I could give it a try, I'm planning on buying some make up Monday anyway (I bought some today for a friend and when I got home I realised I wanted it for myself!)

Personally, I saw yes. But it's down to the person and their preference, it's always worth a try and see how you get on with it though.

True! I will purchase some on Monday and try it out. I will also get my friend to show me how to use everything I buy properly, as she is good with make up. I'd like to be more confident about applying it, then maybe I'd wear it more often.

I used to be terrible with make-up and know absolutely nothing about it. Now, thanks to ALOT of practice - i'm pretty decent. I just love experimenting with it.

Cool, I really should try. I always think I'm no good and also worry my parents will wonder why I'm suddenly wearing it. But sometimes it just makes you feel good.

I also have thin lips and tend to lick everything off, which is ok for gloss but not so much with lipstick as it's more noticeable.

Some people in online tutorials colour in the whole lip with liner and others just do an outline round the edges, which is best?

When I used to work in a coffee shop, there was an old lady who came every morning for a blueberry muffin. She always had hot pink lipstick surrounded by a ring of wine red lip liner.

I use 2 shades of lip stain, a darker one for the sides and outer edges of my lips, a lighter one to fill in the middle and then I use a lip balm to blend the two evenly, it gives the illusion your lips are fuller and more 'pouty' without looking too pouty, y'know?

Anyway, I don't wear lip liner or even regular lipstick as I feel it's too gunky on my lips, I've only recently started wearing anything besides regular lip balm on my lips so I guess anything would feel goopy :/

Pointless reply.

filling in your whole lip would be best. Just doing an outline won't affect the longevity of the lipstick and will still leave a ring around the edges of your lips as it fades. Colouring in the whole of your lips will make your lipstick fade evenly and last longer, you also won't get the ring of colour around your lips after it's faded.

Massive side point, but tee hee, whenever I see Alot I think of this.

On topic though, I'm utterly rubbish with make up. I use lipstick but afraid I know nothing about liner or gloss or anything. Sounds like there is some good advice here though!
