Hi,

I am not too sure where to post this!

I am studying via the Open University although I am studying full time. I have various health issues:

- Mental health difficulties (Anorexia and Depression)
- Physical health difficulties (Osteoporosis and severe Gynaecological problems which cause terrible pain)

How much do you get if you qualify for DSA? With the above issues, would I qualify?

If you have any experience with this/how much money you received, please let me know.

DSA has honestly been one of the best things that I have ever received! No, I don't think that I'm disabled but it has allowed me so much support during my time at university so far, I am genuinely very grateful for it. I gained a laptop and printer, with printer allowance a lot of software to aid my vision and studying, as well as a book allowance (which I haven't used thus far), the ability to receive extensions when required, MH mentoring, my department also are aware of my difficulties with presentations, if I don't attend I don't get pestered (I do try to attend). The money you receive will only be to cover costs of any needs you have that are affected by your disability and you have to post the receipts to Student Finance in order to qualify for this.

I think that you would qualify with the above issues because I qualified and I have no actual diagnoses and am on no medication. It seems that it's based on the impact your disability has on your studies...

I'd say go for it!

Also, when you are assessed, be as honest as possible. When I had my assessment, I was in the room with the assessor lady - who was lovely - for 2 and 3/4 hours which was a very long time! You can have breaks if you need, though I didn't, I just basically stated things how they were and detailed my worst days. It sounds a bit depressing but you've got to say how it really is in order to get the support that you deserve.

I was with the Open University

I think there are a few things that are different to a normal uni as you don't go to lectures etc.

That said it's definately worth applying for it.

Something else I forgot to mention....

Can you apply for benefits if you're studying part time via the OU? Due to my MH and physical problems, I am unable to work currently.
