It is often very hard to offer advice if you dont know where they live. Sometimes you can tell by spelling i.e. americans spell colour color.
Should it be a rule that you should put your location in your profile? It could be as simple as a country, or specific state/county.

I can see what you mean, but I'm not sure that everyone would be comfortable with disclosing their location and that has to be their right to decide for themselves, surely?
I dont think its necessary really....if I think someone is from the UK and theyre not they will usually correct me!x
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.
It'd be helpful to instantly know if someone was from the UK/America/Other.
But you can kind of tell based on spelling, the context (like mentioning GPs or insurance, or ER vs. A&E) or time zone (America is like 5-6 hours behind).
And you know, most people are in the UK here, and the Americans sneak on at night when we're asleep.
It doesn't matter where you come from; it matters where you go.
No-one gets remembered for the things they didn't do.
We won't all be here this time next year,
so while you can take a picture of us.
We're definitely going to hell,
but we'll have all the best stories to tell.
Tali I thought you were an aussie for the longest time!x

I dont even know why!just one of those assumptions!x

I agree with the others. If you offer advice and the person is American or from another country, they will say and you can then tailor further comments appropriately.
I'm American but on here I usually assume people are British until they say otherwise! Plus it's fun to guess based on word choice and whatnot. But yes, people will correct you.
I don't feel at all that people should put where they're from in their profile or anything after all SI and things are a sensitive subject and a lot of people want as little info on here as possible and for some even the country is too much.
The 1 place where it is likely to have the biggest affect is on the FAA and with that it may be helpful if people were to say where they're from (and if they're from the UK, which country as NHS services differ throughout the UK) but then it's up to the person themselves and it's often something that after a post or two we can work out anyway, at least whether they're in the UK or not.
Eugh, the idea of making location compulsory scares me greatly, and might even be in breech of some data confidentiality or some such law.
I do understand your reasoning behind it; befrienders is quite a useful tool as it is an international website that puts you in contact with your national Samaritans equivalent.
I'm a figment of Jenna#s imagination, so I'm wherever she is.
But no, I think it is up to the person as to if they should give their location. even FB doesn't force you to give a location so why should this site just to make life a bit more convenient for people offering advice when location is usually given by the OP after a while.
i think this is similar to knowing people's ages... it helps, but that is really up to the person whether they want to say or not. and if you guess wrong, usually people just correct you and it isn't a big deal

I'm from Canada, if it doesn't say location for a member I usually just assume they are from the UK until proven otherwise. It doesn't seem like there are very many Canadians on here to me but I'm probably just not online enough...
