I am currently:
Is this acceptable?

My boyf has been suffering some anxiety which for a while caused him to have panic attacks at work so he needed regular breaks and so on. His work seem to have been pretty useless about making adjustments despite putting him in touch with a counsellor and stuff.

There are voluntary redundancies taking place at his work and his supervisor suggested that he should take the redundancy if he can't handle the job! This is absolutely not what he wants or needs. He enjoys his job, but he occasionally needs to take longer breaks, which he takes out of his personal time allowance, and sometimes leaves early if he's struggling and makes up the time later in the week. Which since he is on flexitime he is theoretically allowed to do, so I can't see why his managers have a problem with it.

Does anyone else think its inappropriate to suggest an employee quit their job/choose redundancy due to mental health rather than just putting in place measures to help him (eg longer breaks)

I'm sorry to hear that your boyfriend has been struggling. It's a good thing he has someone like yourself there to support him. I agree that one his manager said was grossly inappropriate, and possibly verging on discrimination, which is illegal. If the employer is aware that someone has a mental illness, there is legislation in place to ensure that they are still treated fairly at the workplace and it is their obligation to make arrangements for an individual to allow them to stay in work for as long as possible. If your partner feels he is being discriminated at the workplace you should definitely suggest that he brings this up with management, as a stressful working environment will not make his anxiety any easier. Hopefully it was just poorly picked words by his manager and that he will receive more support in the future.
