I am currently:
quetiapine or risperidone

My doctor just gave me risperidone on a very low dose because quetiapine made me very sleepy.

I don't start it for a few weeks yet but i don't know if i want to start it, the doctor didn't go through any side effects or anything really.

I googled the side effects and it says my prolactin levels might increase, does anyone know what that means?

Has anyone changed from quetiapine to risperidone, did anything change?

I think you should go back and ask for a better explanation from your doctor. It's not on that they didn't fully inform you.

I can't go back to that doctor now for about 6 months unless something goes really wrong.

That doc well shes a phsyc, just says what i should have and my gp prescribes it. I'm really worried now though because i don't know if they will let me have quetiapine because the gp can't change my prescription without this doctor.

I did say i don't mind what drug she gave me aslong as i don't get sleepy on it, but the other side effects of risperidone seem a whole lot worse than the side effects of quetiapine. I'm just really worried now

Depends what your using it for.

Quietapine is better at stabilising mood where as rispiridone is better at combating psychosis (only by a tiny bit mind).

In my experience with quietapine the sedation does wear off over time x

I thought i was using it for depression, that was the original idea, but my phsyc doc said today it was for anxiety so i don't even know anymore. I've been on quetiapine for a year now and im still sleepy

I think it's suggested that Risperidone at a very low dose is useful for treating anxiety.

Raised prolactin means that the hormone 'prolactin' in your blood is at a higher than normal level. This can cause symptoms like producing breastmilk, stopping periods and reducing sexual function. It is not uncommon on Risperidone but is more likely to happen after you've been on it for quite a while, and usually happens at higher doses.

I'm on Risperidone and have been on Quetiapine in the past. I find Risperidone much less sedating.

But I agree with others; if you have any concerns regarding taking it, do try and speak to your GP or care co-ordinator.

So she's just prescribed you medication and told you to come back in 6 months?! That is not on in any way. Any change to psychiatric medication needs close monitoring. I would complain if I were you.

I have been on Quetiapine before being on risperidone and I find that I like risperidone much better. I don't feel the sedation like I did on quetiapine and I think it's been better for keeping my so-called "psychosis" at bay.

I know im using it for my depression as an addon for my antidepressants, my anxiety isn't that bad so i guess shes just got me confused with someone else or something because i said something else that id already told her and she acted like id never said it before.

Bellatrix- this physc says what drugs i get and then my gp sees me every month, but my gps not allowed to change any meds untill i see my physc again, but shes just too busy.

Foxes and reappear, did you get the other side effects of risperidone? I don't get any other side effects with quetiapine other than sedation, but the effects of risperidone seem a lot worse than any i could have got on quetiapine.

im just really worried about the side effects especially as i wont be able to see my doctor untill i come back home from christmas, after i start the risperidone so if anything goes wrong ill be stuck, and i can't speak to any professionals about this for another 2 weeks when my gp appointment is

Yeah, this pretty much. When you're prescribed something, 6 months is a ridiculous amount of time to have your first consultation to see how it's going, this should be done after a few weeks. If you have any side effects you can't handle you should definitely contact your doctor asap.

I've taken both meds. I take quetiapine atm on a really low dose along with mirtazapine and it works really well. I used to take 200-300mg of it a night and it was too much like it was for you, too sedative and I hated sleeping 10-12+ hours a night. Risperidone was okay to begin with but I started to feel quite restless after I'd been on it a while and in the end couldn't sleep at all. Saying that, I was going through a lot at the time and it could have been the stress from that causing me literally sleepless nights.

Just remember that side effects affect people very differently. Although you could see online the top reported side effects, you could easily get none of them if not only 1 or 2 which may not even be major or too noticable.

Everything passes, everything changes. Just do what you think you should do.

I don't meant to scare you, but I've heard that risperidone is a stronger med, so the side effects might be a bit more apparent. I do get more side effects on risperidone than I did on quetiapine, though. Like, lactation, increased anxiety and restlessness. But overall I feel like it treats my symptoms better.

Risperidone made me lactate. It was good at controlling the madness though. Good luck with it. :)

the lactation side effect is freaking me out so much. I've had no other side effects with quetiapine and it works really well except for the sleepiness, think i might wimp out and just stick on it, ill be too stressed thinking every day about any side effects i might get.

My physc isnt very easy to get hold of, i can only get appointments on wednesdays, so i think she only sees patients then, so shes constantly busy, plus shes been off sick quite a lot. Theres nothing i can do shes the only person i can see, but she said she wanted to discharge me from her anyways so i dont know why she agreed to change meds if shes just going to leave me.

but thanks for replying everyone :)
