Does anyone here get excessively annoyed when people turn up to visit when you're not expecting them? I always prefer it if people at least notify me that they're coming, even if I haven't given them permission per se, so I am mentally prepared for their visit. It's just like this afternoon when someone came over that I wasn't expecting - I was in the middle of doing something when she came over. I did not want to be rude so I made her a cup of tea and talked to her for half an hour before she could see that I was not in the mood to talk, and ended up leaving. I don't go quiet deliberately - I tend to get frustrated that I am being forced to talk when I have nothing to say, and naturally go quiet.
The other thing that makes my blood boil is people asking me two questions "what's wrong?" and "what's going through your mind?". The former question riles me up because, if I wanted to talk about my problems, I would do so out of my own accord; I do not like people trying to force personal information out of me. The same goes for the latter question: what goes through my mind is private business, and no one else has any place asking me about it unless I choose to tell them. There was one guy I used to avoid like the plague because he was always asking me what was wrong all the ****ing time, just because I was going quiet. I'm an introvert - I have the perfect right to be quiet!
I also get very irritated when people call me up 'just for a chat', especially if it's someone I see regularly anyway. In my opinion, phones are only there to convey information and arrange meetings; I hate using them for no reason at all. I used to go out with someone who would call me excessively, and I ended up breaking off the relationship as a result because I simply could not cope with that volume of phone calls.
Extroverts make little sense to me anyway - always blabbing on and making brainless chit-chat. I mean, if you have nothing important/interesting to say, why break golden silence at all? Sadly, introverts are frowned upon in our Western culture - a shame really since the greatest artists, composers, scientists and writers are all introverts, there being a strong correlation between introversion and IQ, and all...
I hate it when people ask what Im thinking because usually Im thinking about something rubbish and I think that question is a crap convo starter.
I always get 'are you alright.' Yes Im fine I just dont feel the need to talk constantly for no ****ing reason ¬_¬ x
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.
I don't like people turning up unexpectedly either because I like to be prepared beforehand. I find myself searching for an acceptable answer to the question "what are you thinking?" because often what I'm actually thinking of is something boring or odd and it wouldn't really make for a good conversation

YES! It's a very culturally acceptable thing to do where I'm from I think, but it pisses me right off! Although not for the same reasons as you I think, I like a good chit chat, but I like it to be planned. I'd rather agree a convenient time, instead of someone turning up unannounced, when they might be interrupting me doing something important.
Additionally, doing the fancy test things puts me as an introvert, and I certainly used to be, but I don't think I am now! Although I wouldn't say I just blab on brainlessly. I like to try to make conversation with people to get to know them a bit [also pathological fear of awkward silences :p] and my friends say they like the fact that I get things started and bring people together.
Furthermore, I think extroversion has its advantages. For example, I am quite good at maths, and the extroverted side of me meant that I put my hand up lots in class to answer questions and was noticed quickly and was pushed to do extra things. I think both my slight tendency to show off, and my willingness to engage with extra work, ask lots of questions etc all played a part in my overall success. And I certainly wouldn't of achieved so highly without the support of teachers who realised I was bright, because I was willing to put myself out there.
Although I have a lot of respect for introverts too, and I think it takes both introverts and extroverts and everyone in between to make the world go round :)
The test thingys say im an introvert but i like to blabber on. Usually nonsense. Unexpected visitors do indeed suck though

Some of life's mysteries will never be solved, such as why, after spending an entire evening listenong to Bach, do I find myself humming "the birdie song".......
I am reaching, but i fall, and the stars are black and cold, as i stare into the void of a world that cannot hold- les miserables
You introverts clearly aren't doing it right.... no one calls round here unexpectedly because I don't really have any friends!
I've become more and more introverted as I get older, I've turned down invitations out (just to family) for the past several weekends because by the end of the week I feel I need a full two days away from people in my own home to properly recharge myself.
People don't call me just for a chat either because they have learnt I never ever answer a phone!!

This is totally me!x

I don't like people turning up unexpectedly but in honesty I hate people turning up at all lmao.. I prefer my own space, except when I go out to meet people which isn't often. I'm not a people person.. Can you tell? Lol..
Fellow introvert here. :)
In my case, all the annoyance is at my flatmate/landlady and her/her son's guests... hence my quest for my own place..
Ironically, she apparently is also an introvert. I guess less than me, maybe? Or in a different way...?? /ramble
Introversion is definitely the way forward. Although, I suppose, if everybody were that way nobody would ever talk to one another I'm quite happy for people to ask me how I am, but I agree about people showing up unexpectedly. I actually have a friend who used to do that, and we had to have a 'conversation' about it before she stopped, because she didn't understand how stressful I found it. With phone calls, I usually call my friends, as my mobile is on permanent silent mode, so they know I won't answer ...
And the illusion of love is the only promise of defence, and even that will crumble.

I disagree. There are plenty of cultures where introversion is valued, especially in the Far East, yet people still communicate there. "Introvert" and "unsociable" are not necessarily the same thing; introverts merely want to talk less than do extroverts. We're not necessarily complete hermits ;)

Yep, I agree; my comment was meant to be mildly ironic but obviously a fail on my part! I'm very much an introvert myself, though I think as I've gotten older and more comfortable with myself I'm a little less so. I don't think western culture values introversion as much as it should - the book I linked challenges that, it's a fascinating read if you're interested.
