I've searched and can't find a thread like this, so any singers on RYL? If so, where do you sing and what do you like to sing? even if it's just in the shower, that's still cool.
Myself, I've done a few shows and won a few prizes, but I'm not proffessonal by any means. I love it though. I am right now practising for an open mic night in my new local town. It's my first gig in a while, and first one living in this area. So I'm a bit nervous but excited.
I've decided to sing Bring me To Life by Evanescence, Numb by Linkin Park and World Behind my Wall by Tokio Hotel. I usually sing pop stuff like Girls Aloud so I see this as a challenge, but they are the type of music I listen to now and sing along with so I hope if I do a lot of practise it will go ok (it's next friday night btw).
Discuss your singing!

Reason: to change a song
I love singing, but I get absolutely terrified when it comes to singing in front of people. I like singing Jack's Mannequin, InMe sometimes, stuff like that.
I think the only issue with singing those types of sings is most people wont know them. I gave up trying competitions as they all seemed to be rigged so i just stick to karaoke, even then i don't like it anymore as i get really tired of people afterwards telling me how good i am (i know it sounds presumptuous lol but it gets tiring when you just want to be left in peace and i dont think im that great either)

I used to be a moderately passable choral singer but then I got out of practise. I like to sing whilst playing the piano though, and I do actually have a video of me singing and playing Delilah by the Dresden Dolls that I may well upload to the creative corner some time when I'm feeling reckless!
Frozen_Inside [do you use your real name on the boards?], what sort of venue is this open mic night?
Mari, for some reason I never would of had you down as a singer! What sort of stuff do you like to sing?
No I don't really use my name on here (although some know it). You should defintely upload that video!
I'm thinking of singing Wild World. I'm not sure exactly about the venue, Ive never been in it but I think it's a kind of centre thing. There won't be alcohol, just tea, coffee and hot chocolate (mmm!)
The problem is I'm not too familiar with popular songs, I like my own bands and musicals and that's all really. So I don't know what would be good.
I love singing but I don't really sing in front of anybody else. Recently, I've been singing Beautiful by Christina Aguilera, Phantom of the Opera and Disney songs. I'm in a show so I'll sing in that but the songs are very disco-based, so you don't exactly have to be perfect
Frozen_Inside - I agree with singing more popular songs at the open night - especially at the beginning of your set. Do you know any classics, like real oldies that everyone knows? Then you could mix in some of the other songs mentioned in your first post. The first song you sing will need to get the crowd warmed up and listening to you.
I used to have singing lessons when I was 14/15 before I got a part time job. Bu when I went to university I joined the local choir, I'm most definitely a soprano! We sing a wide range of songs from Lady Gaga to ELO to World Music to Take That. It's really good fun, the best thing I've done at university.
I enjoy singing, however I have no singing ability so I tend to make my listeners suffer I only attempt to sing properly when I'm on my own... lol. But yes I love singing despite my lack of tune, and good voice
Jenna i tend to sing any song i recognise from the song books ha ha, some of the karaoke places can be a bit outdated and not have anything recent that i know, but i do tend to hog the karaoke a bit lol but i realised singing in an old mans pub was not a good idea in the end ahh.
I would suggest watching a glee episode and pinching songs from that lol.

^^ooh good idea, I have most of the Glee albums so ill have a look through them. Yay for all you singers, I love hearing about people singing. Jay blue I'm sure you're good. As long as you enjoy it that's the main thing anyway.
A friend suggested Mad World. I also thought of Iris, as everyone knows that and it's the kind of music I'm into.

That's a hard song to sing - I think something from a musical would be heaps better as their melodies tend to run more easily, plus more people will know them.
I used to sing and be in choirs that got invited to sing in places but I had to give it up due to life and now only sing in the car. Sadtimes.

so must you know pain.
There are only two ways in which one can live their life. One is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is.
^^aww I'm sorry you had to give it up. I was in a variety group for a while but then I had to stop going cos I was sick and stuff. Then I moved.
Anyway I thought maybe Somebody I Used to Know, that is real popular and everyone knows it. And maybe either Wild World as I said or Breaking Free frm High School Musical?
I am going to decide tomorrow night as I will be home alone so will practise all night. I might even ring the organiser and ask his advice on what would be good. Tanks everyone for the suggestions btw :)
