It sounds like you are going through some difficult things right now. Can you say a little more about what is going on for you right now? I'm sorry to hear that your parents have these problems.

you might want to look at or post in the Substance Abuse Board, as you'll be more likely to get more specific responses...
do you have any professionals to talk to? (not sure how old you are, if you're in school, there is usually a counselor who can get you more resources)... or you could go to AA or NA. if you're a teen still you could try AlaTeen, which is for teens with parents/relatives who're alcoholics. Alanon i think is the adult version of that...

An addiction is like cold water on a burned finger. Instead of a burn the pain is emotional/psychic. Struggling with the addiction is struggling with a symptom and that makes it worse. The root cause is having too many overreactions and too much guilt/anxiety from being too upset (not a natural state). If you stop seeing being upset as normal (no matter how justified it seems) and modify the negative emotions the addiction will lose steam on its own and wither away without struggle. If there is no "burn" there is no sense of relief from cold water. If there is no upset/guilt/anxiety etc the addiction loses its sustaining factor. If there is no itch there is no pull to scratch. Your parents never learned how to handle their emotions and they conditioned you to be an overreactor as well. Its not a genetic thing - its about passing emotional patterns down. You will become like what you react to.
