What do you do when...

What do you do when the doctor on call at the psychiatrists office is an idiot?

I just called my psychiatrists office and told them that the Lexapro was causing me to feel like hurting myself. Unfortunately the doctor on call was very unhelpful...

The conversation with him went something like this:
Him: Hi I'm dr. so and so...
Me: Hi my name is Blah, I'm a patient of Dr. XYZ and I'm having a bad reaction to my medication.
Him: Okay, what's going on?
Me: I'm feeling suicidal due to being switched over from Celexa to Lexapro.
Him: Do you need to go to the hospital?
Me: No, I can't afford that... >.<
Him: Are you alone?
Me: No, I live with my parents and I'm home right now.
Him: Do they know what's going on?
Me: No, They'd freak out.
Him: Are you sure you don't need to go to the hospital?
Me: Yes, I'm sure. I'll be fine and better in the morning. I'll call a friend to come hang out with me.
Him: Well... Okay...
Me: Tell my doctor to call me in the morning. Thanks...

I really don't know what to do right now. I'm feeling pretty bad, I've called my boyfriend and he's on the way over. I just really can't afford a hospital stay and neither can my family. I feel bad for even trying to call my boyfriend to come over. I shouldn't have called, but I guess I needed to... Ugh... I just don't know anymore...

Guess I'll wait until tomorrow...

--- I read over this again, and yeah I don't know what to do, but I am being very borderline right now. I am actually very self-aware right now and cognitively understanding what's going on. I just don't know what to do, and I feel bad for things that aren't my fault... ---

To be honest, the questions re hospital were right - it sounds like you were feeling very unsafe, and that would have been the best way of keeping you safe. When you said that you couldn't afford it, offers of other options could have been helpful - maybe it would have been helpful for you to ask what other things he could have suggested. What did you want him to do? Was it more of wanting someone to fix things and make it better?

It's more of the fact that I hate being switched medication wise. I told him to have my doctor call me tomorrow and I'm assuming that's going to happen, however it may not.

I really just wanted him to try and do something other than suggest things that he's already suggested. It's annoying and unhelpful to me and my situation. Suggesting to go to the hospital, when I've already said that I can not afford it, more than once is (at least in my opinion) somewhat of a dumb action.

I do not like repeating myself, but unfortunately most people seem to have a hearing problem now a days.

I guess I'm just in a bad mood, but I realize this is more from the medication than from my own thoughts and feelings right now.

He was just trying to do his job. What else could he have done aside from suggest hospital or change your medication [which he cannot do over the phone - you'd need to see someone in person]?
