So, I was walking my dog & on the way back at quarter to 1, I saw a hedgehog on the edge of the grass verge near the pavement just standing really still & it made no attempt to move or curl up when I walked up to it so I thought it must be hurt. It was right under a street lamp & I've always heard that there's something wrong if it's out in the open & it has been reeeally hot.
So I picked it up & it made a weak attempt to curl, but it hurt my hands! Luckily it's recycling day & I found a shoebox across the road - WIN!
knocked on my neighbours door & we gave it water which it drank immediately & wet & dry dog food which it practically inhaled. Then it sat in the water bowl so I'm thinking it was hot! It's much perkier now & curling up which is good.
Going to take it to the vet in the morning. He's got a crackly chest so I think he may have lungworm :( Then hopefully he can be released near where I found him.
Awww I would be too scared. I would probably have called a friend and been like AARGH! You do know that the likelihood is the vets will want you to pay for any treatment for the hedgehog! It might be worth look for hedgehog rescue place in your area?
I wondered that about the vet but my friends always takes wildlife into her vet & doesn't pay - they even neutered a stray cat she found! I'll ask first. It's probably better going to an wildlife place anyway so I'll go google one
Mandi - where I live there's about a bazill.ion foxes. There's a family of them living at the bottom of my neighbour's garden - 1 year the Mum kept leaving a cub in my garden & my dog kept bringing it in! They're in my garden all the time, they like to poop IN my dog's bowl & on my front & back doorsteps & pee on everything - in the morning it smells so gross, fox wee is one of my worse ever smells! One time they peed on my trainer coz the dog took it outside - I washed it 4 times in the washing machine & left it in a bucket of steriliser overnight & it still stunk!
There's a hill at the bottom of my road where some of my neighbours feed them & when it starts getting dark you see them all hanging out waiting to get fed, they're right brave as well! My neighbour & I got them mange medicine from the National Fox Welfare Society & we had to leave it out for them in jam sandwiches!
Hedgehog is deff feeling better coz he's making loads of noise

Haha, I did check to see if she was up & her lounge light was on. She was very grateful I showed her my find & I quote 'hedgehogs are my favourite'. She wanted it in hers overnight & I was like no go & find your own overheated hedgehog!
We have a bat/bats by us at the moment, can often see the whizzing around the garden. Much excitement was had the first time we saw them but now it's getting normal!
There will always be a happy ending. If its not happy then its not yet the end.
Aww that's lovely of you to take it in! Hope it's not lungworm, but if it is, at least you found it, I can't imagine it would have had a nice time in the wild, with it!
I rarely see live hedgehogs, normally they're sadly squishes, but the other day we nearly ran over one trundling along in the middle of the road, in Cumbria. I hope it survived our back tires.. >.<
^ We have so many bats up at my parents house. if I go out for a smoke at night, they whizz past your head, it's lovely!
My friend found a squirrel with a broken leg last year, and as I had a car she gave him to me to take to the RSPCA... Biggest regret of my life. Because they're non-native there's actually a law that if you find/capture a squirrel you're not allowed to re-release it, so they took him off me and then told me they would just put him down. I was so angry, if I'd have known they were going to do that I would have waited until morning and then taken him to a wildlife sanctuary a few miles away where I took a fox cub a few years ago or just paid for vet treatment myself and then "accidently" leave the door open or something when he was better...
Yeah Athiri, grey squirrels they have to 'cull' :( because of the red squirrel situation.
Picked it up from the vets this morning. Vet gave him an injection that according to the nurses he spent ages looking up to make sure it was best. Bless him. They said it's already eaten a whole sachet of cat food this morning
Waiting for it to get dark so I can release it. I returned to where I found it last night to make sure it was suitable & I have declared it appropriate!
Must have just been dehydrated ... everyone should leave water out!
