Family therapy session

So I've been going to one-on-one talk therapy for a couple of months, and my parents and my therapist have started bringing up the idea of family sessions. It would actually be just me and my mom and dad with the therapist, not all my siblings, which I'm thankful for, but still...

I'm a little unsure because a lot of my problems are linked to my mom, and I find it very hard to talk to her about personal stuff and my... 'issues'. I'm glad my dad will be there, because I don't think I'd do it if he wouldn't be, but I'm still worried about my mom.

Does anyone have any advice/support for me?

im kind of in your boat with you. ive been in individual therapy for six months, and ill be starting family therapy very soon. the only difference is that i have more problems with my father than my mother. just be honest and remember that no matter what you and your mother have been through, she still loves you. i promise things will be okay. good luck and if you need to talk, message me. xx

I had family therapy a few years ago and just resently. I thought it was gonna be hard but it really wasn't. The therapist will not (or at least should not) force you to talk about anything you don't feel comfortable with so you don't have to talk about your issues if you don't want to.

I also thing that if you are going to talk about hard things with your family that family therapy is the best and safest place to do that because it can be controlled and rationalised by the therapist so that everyone appreciates each others feelings and opinions.

Give it a go. If you don't like it you can always stop doing it. But it could be very valuable for you and your parents.
