How realistic would it be for me to have a career as a "clock smith"

I recently went to get my grandma's watch from the 40's fixed (It's so shiny now ) and I realized how interested I really am in watches and clocks. And I am wondering whether it would be a realistic career move. I am going to University this fall as a freshman (human development major) so I have ample time to change my major or transfer (probably would finish out the year first then transfer my sophomore year) to this technical college that offers a clock and jewelry making associates degree.
They make an average of $39000 a year, but in the US there are only around 2,200 clock smiths.. that probably means there isn't a high demand for it and I probably wouldn't be able to find a job.
Should I take a risk and be a clock smith or should I stick to what I had planned earlier and become...
bum bum buuuuum a kindergarten teacher :O

I'm not really sure how serious I am about this yet, but I think I would enjoy fixing and making clocks :) everything about them enthuses me. But I could also see myself teaching little kids because I love helping people and I adore kids :)
What do YOU think I should do?

You would probably be better off trying to get a job (even if it's voluntary for a few hours at first) in such a shop and seeing whether or not it's right for you. Experience counts for a lot, and it'd give you an opportunity to ask questions to the relevant person.

That sounds like a good idea. Thanks :) I tend to be a very impulsive person so volunteering would probably be a good idea so that I don't do it and then regret it. Like the hair cut I got a few days ago haha.

i'd get some experience first, definitely.

but it isn't totally far fetched, my uncle has that job :P

i've just read your thread about your mom (even though i didn't have anything to reply with), if you did change and train to be a clock smith, how would you handle her reaction? (do what you want, but plan for how to handle the results)
