Coming to Terms with EUPD/(BPD?) Diagnosis

Prior to my latest admission I had been diagnosed with a dissociative disorder - and accompanying De-whatever-disorders as well as my eating disorder, which is just obvious. But now, I've come out of hospital and on my discharge sheet I have an additional diagnosis of EUPD.

Which from looking it up I am to understand is the new name for Borderline PD.

And I can't come to terms with it. Granted it's been about a day or two since I realised, but I know there are a lot of people on here with BPD/EUPD so thought that there might be some advice on how to come to terms with this diagnosis.

I'm just worried it will make getting treatment even harder than it is already, I think i'm on the waiting list for schema therapy, but so far no-one really knows, and last time that happened my funding got declined and no-one told us for a good while: so at the minute my faith in that is low.

As well, I know a lot of people don't like to get this diagnosis, and I'm one of them. I'm really unhappy about it, but feel I don't have a ground to stand on because when I read through the diagnostic criteria for ICD-10 EUPD, I fit most of it: which is upsetting to read that your personality is that screwed up and faulty... does anyone else feel like this?

Just some advice would be great... I'm going to ask when I have my discharge follow up with my CMHT sometime within the week for them to explain it to me.

Thanks honey-bees. x

Hey DollyPOP,

I'm not exactly sure EUPD is now known as BPD. BPD use to be called an emotional disorder. I'm not sure if there are any variations between EUPD or BPD or that they are two distinguishable terms with conspicuous correlations, so you'll have to ask someone who is diagnosed with one of those to answer your question as a primary source.

Basically, BPD is a pattern of instability in self-image and of other people. Their behaviors and feelings persist in the fear of abandonment, impulsive behavior (reckless driving or unsafe sex usually) and sometimes SI behavior. If EUPD reaches the same criterion for BPD or they are indistinguishably the same.. then it's possibly just a rename.

yeah, I think from what I've read they're the same but on different diagnostic criterions, one being DSM-IV, the other OCD-10. They're similar... I don't know,I need to ask in my CMHT appointment, but from what I've read it's a rename... :(

It doesn't mean that your personality is screwed up and faulty, though it can feel like a judgement of that. Rather, I prefer to see it as that things didn't happen when you were younger that supported the development of inner security and feeling safe with relationships. There is a wound in your psyche, rather than it being formed wrong.

^^ Thank You for that. That has helped slightly actually. It's just so difficult to accept that my personality is that messed up and I'm that unlikable/crap at relationships, hence I have few friends: like I meet plenty of people but seldom stay friends with them.

*sigh*

FML. I'm feeling so crap today and just blah. I don't want to be around anyone but myself, and just not in the mood for life atm.

Sorry to rant on. I'm just...bleh, wasting time. x

I just asked te doctor at day patient and in the uk EUPD and BPD are the same thing just like how bipolar and manic depression are the same thing. Depend who diagnosed you as to what they call it. Like some docs prefer one name some prefer the other.
So that is what a psych doc said about an hour ago. If that helps?

Also having this diagnosis actually allows you more access to services than any type of DID.
I know what city you live in and I know that if you have BPD in that city there is a lot of stuff you can access. Sometimes waiting lists are long because A LOT of people have some form of PD diagnosis but there is definitly good valuable help you can access so don't worry about that.

As for coming to terms with it. I can't really help. I know when I was diagnosed bipolar it really helped me to learn about the illness and treatment/daily routines that could help my symptoms.
I think dbt is really good for bpd type symptoms so maybe you could get a dbt work book.
Also ask your team ALL of the questions: mainly ask them how they normally treat your illness and what should you expect.

Sorry I can't help more xxxxx

I've been diagnosed with EUPD, and I've been told that it is the same as BPD, just some professionals use the EUPD term (like you said, its from the ICD rather than DSM).

I wasn't too happy with the diagnosis, and I'm not sure I even fit it but there we go. My social worker described it as not so much a personality **** up, but more a serious of learnt behaviours, which are problematic, but as it is so deep, it seems like your personality is screwed. I dunno, he made it sound better than that, but basically, I don't think it means your personality is screwed and that is it, with no chance of improvement.

Does your area do DBT? That is meant to be really good for BPD/EUPD.

yeah i'm going to do this when i see my CMHT: although I dont think they will see me within a week of discharge as the hospital requested because i saw them like 2 weeks ago. But whenever I DO see them next, i want to go in on my own and ask a lot of questions, I sometimes find it easier to talk when i'm on my own for fear of upsetting my mrs, or getting tld off for saying something wrong or reacting to something wrong.

She's usually helpful, but sometimes not so. I'm sure she'll be fine if i say i want to go on my own.

I've been referred for funding for schema therapy which they think will help with everything, so i guess that's what will happen. I doubt they'll refer me to DBT but i'll ask if my current referral will stand the same or not, and if this diagnosis is officially down on my record now etc.

I'm assuming it might be because it was from the hospital, from 2 doctors, a social worker and a nurse, and it's on my discharge sheet.

:(

'm just really fed up of life at the moment, and this has not helped in any way other than give me more of a complex than i already have.
