I'm playing! As a level 19 Nord, in case you were wondering. Currently having tons of fun killing dragons and blasting their skeletons halfway across the map with firebolt spells.
As for lockpicking, the only tip I have is to nudge the lock as gently as you can, so you can test the lock (hopefully) without breaking the pick. If the lock starts turning, turn it as slowly as you can. Still, it's a shame there's no auto-lockpick option like there was in Oblivion.
For lock picking you need to be systematic. I tend to start at the top and then work down either side, although it depends on the difficulty how I do it. You also need to be slow and sort of nudge the lock along to see if it will give. If it doesn't then stop and start again. Oh, and pick up every pick you find. I've never had to buy any, but there are usually a few available to buy from blacksmiths and general goods shops.
If you are still finding it difficult, you could try putting a perk point or two into it to make things slightly easier could work. Or try to find an item (usually rings or gauntlets) that make it easier.
I still play Skyrim once in a while, but it gets very same-y.
Killing Skooma dealers should not be illegal. Cleaning up Skyrim is a dirty job (except when I can Shout them off cliffs, in which case it's a very quick, clean job), but someone has to do it!
^ I thought it would be nice if there was an option to destroy the Thieves Guild, in a similar way to the Dark Brotherhood. When you go to Riften (which just so happens to be FULL of fetch quests) all you hear about is how bad the thieves are and how they have ruined the city.
I haven't been playing long, so I haven't started on the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood yet. Currently powering through the Winterhold College questline and marveling at the size of some of those dungeons.
I only played Oblivion so far but for lockpicking I found a technique. First - "Save" before attempt. Then use auto attempt until box, door etc opens. If it opens on first few tries you're lucky. If it takes a lot of picks, use your saved place to try again. Using a second auto attempt after a first attempt often gets box open with just a few picks. There was also a Staff of Open that could be used on locks. Check the stores that sell staffs or raid some places with Mages.
Playing on the Xbox and like Lemon once I joined the Thieves Guild my lock picking shot up. The biggest thing working for you when you're trying to level up is even if you snap a pick you still gain experience so I'd just buy a bunch of picks, go into the Training chamber in the Thieves Guild that has a bunch of chests and just go to town.

^ There is no automatic picking in Skyrim. On the PC I know of a mod that will show you the sweet spot of the lock. It's a tad game breaking though!
Bummer - picking locks is a pain but I got my best stuff that way. Hope its easier in Skyrim because lock picking started out a bit too hard in Oblivion. I'm about to start Morrowind and expect that will be pretty primitive looking but lots of people liked the game so I'll give it a go before Skyrim.

It's much easier. The lockpicking mechanic in Oblivion wasn't very intuitive and to be honest, I still have no idea how it works. I used the auto option every single time. It's much simpler and easier to understand in Skyrim.
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
