Psychiatrist assessment- what to expect?

So I have an appointment with a psychiatrist on Monday and I have no idea what to expect, other than a lot of questions. I'm kind of scared. I know I need to be as honest as possible but other than that I am stumped. Is there anything I should take with me?

I have, in the past, found it helpful to write down things that I've wanted to say. I get really nervous when faced with a psychiatrist and everything I think of beforehand tends to disappear out of my head, so notes are useful.

You're right to expect lots of questions. It really depends on what you're going for as to what questions you're asked, so I can't really advise you on that one. You should be given plenty of time to answer them though.

It might help to think of what you would like out of the appointment. What are you hoping to gain from it etc? That might be one of the questions and it can be useful to both you and the doctor if you've got some kind of idea.

If it's an initial assessment then I think it will be at least an hour or two long. There will likely be questions about your family, your childhood, what your problems are, when they began, what you find difficult, what you need help with etc.

It will be less about coming up with solutions and more just finding out in depth about what help you need.

There may be questions that don't seem very relevant answer them anyway.

It will be fine :) If theres anything you feel you can't answer then just say so and they'll move on.
