Restraint. Can they physically cause you harm?

On Sunday I was what can only be described as dragged back to the ward by 2 male members of staff. I refused to come back to the ward because of a man that won't leave me alone (makes sexual comments, touches my hair and asks for kisses). In the process of being dragged back to the ward I have received two bruises to the top of my arms. The one on the right arm is pretty big and the one on the left arm is smaller but still hurts.

Are staff allowed to cause physical harm like this? I realise it was my fault for not returning to the ward but I had my reasons and they weren't doing anything about it.

It's a difficult one because it could be argued that as you were obviously in physical distress, you could've got the bruises yourself & the staff were trying to contain you from harming yourself further. I'm not saying in any way that is what will happen, but I'm thinking of what could be said if you complained to anyone.

Restraint should not cause physical harm & it has to be carried out by people who are properly trained. It shouldn't be leaving marks.

This is a tricky one.
Do you have access to an advocate in your unit? This could be something you could discuss with them.

I think they are trained to deal with restraints as effectively as possible whilst causing minimal 'damage' but quite often on the ward, I have seen restraint causing bruising and injury to people. (Although not as much as when the police are involved!)

I think it's too protect you though. It is worth bringing it up with somebody - either the advocate as suggested above, or the ward manager. Whilst it may be that they did everything to help you, it could be that the manager certainly needs to know that the current restraint methods are leaving injury.

Sometimes injury can't be avoided, especially if you are struggling.
I have frequently ended up with bruises from restraints and they put it down to struggling.

Even when you are seriously hurt they say that to be honest. I have lots of problems with my shoulder because of a bad restraint 3 years ago.

I think the word they use is 'reasonable force'

I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

I have been hurt during restraint before, and I did complain and they used the excuse that, they would have rather caused minor harm to me without intention, rather than me go off and be a danger to the public.
So if your hospital is like mine, yes they will get away with it and will be allowed if deemed necassary.
I hope you feel better.
