implications of sectioning?

I am inpatient in hospital and my psych is going to "detain" me. What are the implications of sectioning, I heard that if you have been sectioned you can't travel to America? I'm just waiting for the second doctor and social worker I think.

I managed to talk my way out of getting restrained last night, but they've threatened me with seclusion? Has anyone had this?

Hi Brambles,

I'm sorry to hear how difficult things are for you. Is there no chance of you staying as an informal patient, or do they feel in order to keep you safe that you need to be detained?

There are implications to being sectioned and I do believe that one of them is that you can't go to America. I e-mailed MIND about it a while ago and they agreed, however things are always changing and who knows for the future.

There are a few others but generally none that are going to affect your daily life, aside from now of course.

xxx

Hiya, i just wanted to say that it is still possible to go to America, even f you have been on a section three. I dropped a friend at the airport two weeks ago who is still on a community treatment order and she was able to fly to Texas. All she needed was a letter from her doctor saying it was safe.

I'm sorry things are so bad for you at the moment. Is there no way you could stay voluntarily? Are you still in the mother and baby unit?

China are funny about people going into their country who have been sectioned.

I suppose that you have to be careful, some jobs might have rules or restrictions surrounding mental health. You don't want to end up on a section that shows up on CRB checks (which as far as I know is some 136s where it's appropriate to have them shown on a CRB).

It's always good where possible to remain informal and not become sectioned. Once you get sectioned it all becomes much harder.

Edited to add- seclusion is not a section, if you were not aware. Seclusion usually means that you are being put into a room, usually bare with a mattress or padding, or a simple bedroom to ensure that you remain safe and cannot hurt yourself while you are agitated/aggressive etc.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

I'm terrified, just waiting on a decision. Yes, still in MBU.

Thanks for taking your time to reply by the way. It's a section 3 they're talking about.

I hope they give you a decision soon. I know what an anxious time it is awaiting their decision. x

Not sectioned :) as long as I agree to stay, any change and he's agreed with my psych recommendation and I'll be on a 3

I'm glad you didn't get a section. I hope that you are able to comply and stay away from a section too.

That's fantastic, I'm really pleased for you and I hope that you will be able to comply with the decisions. I can understand the frustrations it can bring when we have to comply but trust me, it is so much better to comply when you are informal than when you are on a section. x
