Bipolar I + Welbutrin = ?

Just wondering if anyone suffering from bipolar has taken welbutrin? I have ADD and it's really affecting my schoolwork. I am wondering if it's a good idea or bad idea? I took it before but quit and I can't remember if it was because of adverse affects. I do acknowledge that you may not be a doctor lol, but I am hoping to get some insight. Thx all

You aren't your disorder. You are SOMEONE with a disorder. And... you can handle that.

I'm bipolar 1 as well. I am not sure about how welbutrin helps with ADD, but I just got a prescription to help with depression (I haven't taken it then because I went into a manic episode and I have to get that under control.) It is interesting to hear from someone facing the same dilemma. Depression seriously interferes with my life and an antidepressant is very appealing to me. I've done a fair amount of research (and talked to my doctor lately). I know that many people with bipolar take welbutrin and find that it helps them a lot. While welbutrin is less dangerous than the SSRI's some people with bipolar find it incredibly destabilizing. I was told to monitor my moods closely while on it.

In terms of other ADD meds I have taking vyvanse, adderall, and focalin without much trouble. Vyvanse was the most destabilizing, but it also worked as an antidepressant for me. Adderall and focalin actual help me with racing/disordered thoughts because they prevent them from jumping around chaotically and allow me to focus on a task and keep myself out of trouble.

In conclusion I think these medications can be taken, but they all run the risk of inducing mania in some people. Start with a low dose and monitor your moods closely. If you feel like it is destabilizing stop. It is also a good idea to tell a family member to keep an eye out as well, because they might notice beginning signs of an episode before you do, and make more rational decisions. I think this is especially important with bipolar I because manic episodes can be severe. I think it is worth considering because the potential upside is great. The medications I mentioned above are all risks, and they improved my life (and my school work) greatly.
