I don't like people knowing

Hey -

Just wondered if people are in the same situation as me.... I have recently started seeing my school councillor, but she told my head of year about my SH-ing and suddenly it's like the whole school knows and they look at me like i'm a freak, or they just pity me....

I was wondering if people are in/have been in the same situation and can give advice.... xx

My school councillor told the nurse, and i had to get checks every morning to make sure i was ok, and teachers whenever im not looking extermely happy, ask me if i need time or if im ok or do i need to go and see someone, and i thought they all new. But i asked the nurse and she said the teachers wont know, as they're not support and things, they'll probably just notice a difference in my behavior and im over thinking, so may be the same for you?xx

I've done some training in a school and in the morning staff meetings they just say soandso (student) in year whatever is having a hard time at the moment so please be aware of this if you teach him/her. They didn't say what that nature of the problem was so i doubt anyone other than your Head of Year and maybe your form tutor know. They certainly wouldn't be allowed to tell other students. Hope this helps.

I've never been in this situation, but I do not want anyone except my Mom and counselor knowing.

I understand. Every time I had a new therapist I had to tell them all over again. It was so painful to explain and eventually it made me feel like my problems were less, even unimportant. It was also tough to explain to people why I was in therapy. I completely understand where you're coming from.

Uh, when I was in school my counselor sent an email to all my teachers to watch for signs of depression.....so they all stopped to ask how I was feeling and would always mention to me if I looked down or depressed....and of course all my classmates noticed and started making fun of me...

After my suicide attempt back in high school I had teachers I hated- even some who I didn't have classes with- coming up to me and telling me to talk to them if I'm ever sad/lonely/depressed. I hated it. I hate the feeling of being pitied. I understand they just wanted to help, but it still makes you feel very outcast, doesn't it?

Try to remember that the teachers just want to help you and make sure you're ok- even if they're doing it in a way that makes you uncomfortable. And try to remember that if the other students think less of you for it, it's because they're simple and small-minded, it doesn't mean you're a freak. Also, it gets better over time. Eventually the jerks of the school will find someone else to single out for no reason other than that they're different.

Stay strong, Katie.
