Casually de-icing the car when...

The door locks itself with the engine running! It's not even my car which is the best bit. It's a hire car as I was involved in a car crash the other day. I was supposed to be at work at 8am and so was my mum who's car is blocked by this car. So the engine I running with the. Heaters on full blast and now have to wait over an hour for recovery. I hate hire cars! Anyone else ever have this happened?

Good start to a day :(

Oh dear. I think that happened to me once but I was able to get my spare key, open the boot, and climb in and take the keys out of the ignition.

I put it down on paper and then the ghost does not ache so much.

Don't try to calm the storm, calm yourself, the storm will pass.

This happened to my mum before, she knocked the lock as she was shutting the door and doh, cars locked, engine on, keys inside!

Never leave the keys in the ignition most modern cars self lock after a certain period of time of the doors closing. It's an anti theft measure. Thieves often target owners warming their cars on the drive, they'll sneak up when your back is turned, hop in, and drive off. Happened to my neighbour.

Worse thing is your insurance company probably wouldn't pay out if your car was stolen whilst on the drive with the keys in. Most insurers have clauses in their rules which state you're not covered for that sort of thing. My neighbour had his £20,000 car stolen and the insurer wouldn't pay out a penny. Cautionary tale for you.

Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money.
They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with.
Some men just want to watch the world burn.

My car automatically locks itself after awhile as well (if the car is on).

Best Advice that no-one ever takes from me: Use two keyrings. Not terribly appropriate since it was a temporary vehicle in your case, but in general, I have two key rings. One, which is just my car key and the remote unlock/alarm thing. And second, which is my old house/my parents house key, my apartment key, and miscellaneous keys + another car key. Keeps me from locking myself out.

Also I don't have a "remote start", so I can go start my car up and let it warm while still being locked. I'm not totally lawyeresque, but I think around here, that makes a difference legally (as well as just lowers the chance that someone will steal it). Sort of like the difference between someone walking in your open front door, versus "breaking and entering" if they come rob from you.
