Stuck completely - mental illness and work
I was doing so well, got through my counselling degree but I've got worse again , been diagnosed with GAD. At the moment I'm really not sure what work I could do. Can't see myself doing anything target related or related to my degree at prsent but I need to work for financial reasons and also because before long not working will make me feel bad again.

Could you try temping for a little while to help build up your confidence but without the pressure?
btw I don't work because of my mh problems - although hoping to in another year

I went through the very same problem and I won't say it is completely resolved now. I wasn't quite well enough to work but not working at all drove me even more crazy. Its harder at the moment because the job market is so bad but don't lose hope. The best thing you could probably do is find part time work to start with and if possible work in a job you enjoy.
Another option is to go onto benefits but volenter. There is no pressure with that and it gets you used to being in a working enviroment and gives you structure.
I volenter with a youth organization and its the best thing I've ever done, I love it. You can do work in almost any area though, animals, kids or even working in a shop. It has the bonus of looking fantastic on your CV :)
hope this helps somewhat and don't push yourself too hard. I learnt that one the hard way. I went to work in a very stressful job doing 40+ hours a week because I was dertermined my illness wouldn't beat me. All that done was give my illness the tools to beat me. Even if your only managing to work one day a week that is a huge step and something to be very proud of :)

I agree, a temporary (perhaps part-time) job might be just what you need, in terms of 'getting you out the house', bringing some money home and not being too stressful. Perhaps draw up a list of things you think you could manage and then go from there?

There are, it has been said, two types of people in the world. There are those who, when presented with a glass that is exactly half full, say: 'This glass is half full'. And then there are those who say: 'This glass is half empty'.
The world belongs, however, to those who can look at the glass and say: 'What's up with this glass? Excuse me? Excuse me? This is my glass? I don't think so. My glass was full! And it was a bigger glass!

Yeah, forgot to add, I am awaiting to start a volunteer role for a few hours a week to try and help me build confidence to get back into some kind of paid work. That could be an option. I am on benefits at the moment though.

Have you thought of private tutoring?

I'm not sure what you mean Katie... Do you mean me tutoring others? I'm not sure I can claim benefits as my partner works. I feel so weak for not being able to carry on at work.

There are quite a few MH organisations which can help people find suitable work or activities. Have you tried looking at any of them? I'm sure MIND can help and maybe there are local organisations near you.
