Mood stabilisers and vitamin supplements...

Do any of you who are on mood stabilisers also take vitamin supplements, especially vitamin B/folic acid. And if you do, was the supplement prescribed or did you choose to take it off your own bat?

I take an anti-depressant and a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement [which has all the B Vits and folic acid, I also take an additional magnesium supplement at night, for sleep]. The supplement was advised by my psychotherapist, I believe, as when I'm stressed I don't digest nutrients from food well. It helps my mood, too. But I can't speak for mood stabilisers, sorry.

I took folic acid as part of the drug trial I did in the past as apparently it can be good for depression I can't recall the dosage but google ce quel (all one word I just don't want google to link it!!) for more info!

Do be careful with some supplements eg st johns worts and 5htp as these can interact with psych medication

Thanks for your replies. Just wondered because mood stabilisers inhibit the uptake of folic acid, and I didn't know if I should be replacing those levels. I'm going to ask my GP about it once I'm back at uni. :)

i take folic acid. have done ever since being told to do so after blood tests at Manchester Unviersity Specialist Serivce for Affective Disorders. They said being deficient in folate can make you feel depressed. I've been on it for 10 years now.
