MMA

Despite my hatred of sports in general, I've recently fallen in love with mixed martial arts. I've watched the last few BAMMA shows and am currently working my way through every UFC show one by one (I'm watching UFC 5 as I type this).

So, if there are any MMA fans on RYL, let's get a little discussion going, shall we?

I don't watch it on TV or anything, but I've been to a few fight shows where they do MMA and our club does a bit of MMA (although I never have :P) and it's good to watch!

I watch the UFC quite often. Jon Jones' choke out of Machida was brutal.

I only watch UFC, I have too little time to start watching BAMMA too...

Forget Jones/Machida, Frank Mir totally mangled Big Nog! That was a brutal finish! Especially gutting because he was soooooo close to getting a KO before he went for the submission instead :/

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level & beat you with experience

God, I really need to catch up on UFC. I know who Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez and Anderson Silva are, but I've never seen any of their fights... I'm still stuck in the era of Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn.

I have the first 6 UFC's on DVD, but I might start just Pirate Bay-ing them instead of buying them. At the rate I'm going I won't catch up with modern UFC for years.

MMA is one of my biggest passions. I've followed the sport from about age 13 when I got bored of professional wrestling. I could probably sit and talk about it all day, so yeah, nice idea for a thread.

I missed the last event as I was at a work christmas party, but when I got in late I caught the Nog/Mir and Jones/Machida fights. Both indeed very brutal.

Who's looking forward to Lesnar/Overeem? I can't wait. Cerrone/Diaz looks to be interesting too, I'm hoping Cerrone takes that one. As for the main event, I really like both guys.

I've never tried it but I know of it and have watched some of it.
We do a class at my gym but, having to be working everytime I've never tried one out.

You may really like it. If you're unsure of what to start with I'd recommend a general MMA class that'll have a bit of everything. I'm sure there'll be specific classes though such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, kickboxing, muay thai, boxing, general conditioning, etc. Even if you have no ambitions of competition, they're something very different than can make working out a little more interesting.

I'm not against MMA. But it does seem like every bout just ends up with two guys locked up on the floor. I miss boxing - or I should say I miss boxing from before it became such a farce.

I've noticed the same thing... I don't mind it so long as both guys are actively trying to get a submission (or escape from the guy trying to get a submission), but I do hate it when they just end up in a complete stalemate (see Gracie/Shamrock at UFC 5 for the worst example - and most boring fight - I've ever seen).

That said, not every fight ends up like that. Admittedly I haven't been watching MMA for very long so I don't know exactly how often fights go to the ground, but I've seen some pretty brutal stand-up fights (for example, Watson/Reid at BAMMA 4 - I think they went to the ground a few times, I don't really remember, but overall it was a vicious fight, and the one that really sold me on MMA in general).

I'm going to try my best to catch it, just because I really want to see how Lesnar fights. I was a huge fan of his back in his pro wrestling days (and I still think he's one of the most talented wrestlers of his size I've ever seen, aside from his lack of charisma or conviction on the mic), but I've never seen him in a real fight. Should be interesting.

Lesnar's extremely explosive for his size. Quite entertaining to watch.

For any new fans to the sport I could recommend www.mma-core.com - you'll find tonnes of fight material on there. There used to be an organisation called Pride which ran in Japan until around 2007, it was the home to so many great fighters, some of which are doing well these days in the UFC. I'd recommend looking up fighters such as Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko Cro Cop, Mauricio Rua and Wanderlei Silva.

As for Lesnar/Overeem - if Brock can take him down and hold him down, it's his fight most likely (unless he gets caught in a submission, which Overeem is pretty good at also). If it stays standing and Lesnar can't get him down, it'll be embarrassing for him as his striking defence is so awful, and Alistair's overall striking is the best in the division.

I'm just getting into MMA & learning who the top fighters are - recently treated myself the the MMA 2012 annual lol. Those guys are talented but brutal. Have started training at an MMA class which sparked the interest - want to fight later down the line & hoping I survive my first bout! can't work out where to see old UFC fights tho? youtube only has mini clips. guess i'll have to buy dvds. oh no wait - just checking out the link in the post above :)

Yeah, the link above should be helpful :) If there's a particular style you enjoy watching, e.g. muay thai or jiu jitsu, I can recommend some fighters to look up or some specific fights/video links.

Probably my favourite fighter of all time, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. When he signed with the UFC (around late 2006 I think) he was a little past his prime, but fought in the Pride organisation in Japan which bouts are contested in a ring and have slightly altered rules (soccer kicks, knees to the head of a downed opponent are allowed, elbows are not allowed, rounds are 2x10 minutes not 3x5 minutes). He was a squad commander of the Croatian anti-terrorist unit as well as fighting regularly, pretty fearless dude - known for his infamous left high kick finish.

To add to the excellent choice of Mirko "Cro-Cop" Filipovic.

Possibly the best MMA fighter ever, and my personal favourite. Fedor Emelianenko

If my health ever improves a little I'd love to try my hand at a few MMA classes. I boxed when I was 9 or 10 and a few years ago I did kendo (but only lasted a few months before health problems put an end to it). I wouldn't want to make a career out of it, but it'd be useful at least, seeing as I live in a pretty rough area and have been mugged several times...

Oh wow, I'm sorry to hear that. If health-wise you feel you can attempt these classes and perhaps try and make it a consistent thing, that'd be really good for you. I've been hesitant to commit to long term memberships with martial arts gyms as I have a hard time with consistency, I wouldn't want to waste money or go through phases where I have no desire to train. Very tempting as there's been a new MMA gym open here a little while now.

As for the Fedor highlight, awesome! He's certainly one of the best ever. It's a shame he never fought in the UFC before he dropped the 3 losses in a row.

I'm watching UFC 9 at the moment, and holy crap, Amaury Bitetti vs Don Frye was one of the best fights I've seen so far. Very one-sided though (I was raised on a steady diet of pro-wrestling, so I like a bit of back-and-forth, even if it's not very realistic sometimes :P).

EDIT: Wow, from a great fight to a not-so-great fight... Severn/Shamrock II was really disappointing; even the commentators couldn't help saying how bored they were. If I wanted to watch two people pointlessly circle each other all night, I would've watched Strictly Come Dancing instead. Painful to watch.
