So normally a baking competition is judged through taste-testing, and as yummy as it would be to recieve loads of cake through the post it's not particularly practical!
So the Community Team decided that the baking competition should be to bake something (anything!) that emulates RYL. The scope for this is of course massive so the rules are as follows:
- You need to bake it yourself.
- You need to submit a picture of the end result with your username in the picture.
Ideally you will include a recipe so others can make it should they so wish!
Lastly tell us why you chose to make the product you did!
Happy Baking

So... no one else has entered yet... feel a bit lame...
I made almond and apricot biscotti!
For three reasons:
1. I wanted biscuits.
2. I plan to make biscotti for Christmas presents and wanted a trial run.
3. This competition.
Also, my tenous link to RYL is..... apricots are orange... therefore these are self harm awareness (and almond) biscotti!
I didn't really follow a recipe but got an idea of quantities and method from James Martin on the bbc website.
The following content has been hidden - Reason : How I made them and more pics.
So.
I mixed 250g flour with 250g sugar, and some baking powder.
Then I beat three eggs and added the zest and juice of a lemon to the eggs.
Then I gradually mixed in the eggs to the flour.
Then I mixed in about 200g almonds and 125g chopped dried apricots.
Then I realised it was way too wet so I added more flour, then some more flour, and some more sugar for good measure.
Then I dumped it on the work top, cut it in half, made each half into a sausage shape, and dumped them each on a greased baking tray.
Then I baked them for about 30 minutes at 180degrees.
They're supposed to stay in a sausage shape, but mine turned into a crazy pancake of bicsuitty goodness.
Then I sliced them up, and baked them again!

For me they represent my progress towards 'recovery.' I was clinically depressed last Christmas and took no pleasure from any of the festivities. Although I am still struggling with depression, this year I intend to take enjoyment from things where I can, if that makes any sense? It is kind of my new philosophy; having depression doesn't mean I can't enjoy anything. They mark the start of a determination to enjoy myself.
I chose to make/made mince pies because I bought a new silicon baking tray (very exciting!) and wanted to try it out to see if it really didn't require greasing (it didn't) and because it's Christmas! I also wanted to practice making mini mince pies in preparation for making some for my brother's housewarming party in a couple of weeks.
Recipe to follow (I'm in bed and it's freezing 'out' there!) but in a nutshell I made a batch of short crust pastry, rolled it out then used a pastry cutter to make the round bases. I then filled them up with mincemeat and used a star shaped pastry cutter to place the stars in the centre. I brushed them with milk for a golden brown finish and cooked on gas mark 6 for 20 minutes. They were very tasty!
Okay I really need any entries by tomorrow evening say 9pm British Time

I would love to partake in am RYL-related baking contest, but am unable to do so at the moment due to not having a functional oven or any time. Maybe we can have another one sometime in future?
Thank you for the entrance and we can definitely run another one in due course!
However the winner is Foxtrot Oscar and the mini mince pies
