memory

I'm getting frustrated because I'm having problems with my memory. I always have but it's really getting to me. I don't' remember much before the age of 13, even then is a little fuzzy. I'm scared of why that may be. I'm having problems taking tests because I don't remember the stuff. Tonight during my class I got this intense headache than I couldn't take note because she would be talking and I'd forget what she said immediately. I didn't talk to her after because I just wanted to get back to my room and take a shower. That scared me a little because last year my lithium level rose and I had stroke like symptoms (couldn't form words, headache, loss of balance, tremors)... I was an idiot though I didn't go to the er then until I called my psychiatrist a few days later....I don't think my parents realize just how bad my memory is. I was in tears during class. I don't even know what to do anymore and it's getting extremely frustrating and discouraging

I actually talked with my mom a bit tonight and she thinks the short term memory is from my meds (not sure about that but I will talk to my psychiatrist at some point) and as for the long term she said next I'm home she'll bring out the photo albums.

I'm concerned about my memory and the consultant clinical psychologist did a standardised memory assessment that lasted an hour and a half. It may be worth asking for something similar to see if they can identify any issues.

I was told that my bad memory could be put down to partly the illness (depression & bpd). I've also had ECT which I think is why my memory is bad but the docs don't seem to agree with this.
Definitely talk to your doc about this as it seems to be really distressing you and that's not good.
take care,

I am going to talk to my psychiatrist this Friday and am frustrated.... I go literally no sleep last night so my memory is even worse today and my professor won't let me record lecture.... I'm also sick so that doesn't help :( I will def ask about the memory assesment.....

diagnonsense- as a psychology major I had to do research on bipolar treatment, including ECT. Every site I found says short term and long term memory loss is very common and that there are reports, although rare, of it affecting memory like you are saying. Unfortunately drs. don't always know what they are talking about (which is sad) as I had one tell me stiff joint isn't a side effect of crestor even though it's the biggest and most dangerous one.... I found the ECT articles on a school data search so they were scholarly articles.... (not diagnosing, just letting you know what I have discovered)

Thank you for replying and letting me know I 'm not alone.
