One of my Friends is a Kleptomanic

He has only told me this recently and he says has been like this for years and the thing is he has a very good job, wife,2 kids and he said if he ever gets caught all that will be gone and i have begged him to go to a doctor, get help as it is a mental disorder but he said that doctors have a right to tell the authorties if it's anything illegal

Anyone got any advice?? i'm dreading the day that he gets caught and everything for him is ruined and he is such a good dad, great friend and great husband.

There is an exercise being used my military mentioned in this thread:

Something like that can resolve compulsive issues with hidden causes. Maybe someone stole from him once and he got angry and then felt compelled to steal. People can become what they hate.

Do you think your friend might want to get help, hence him disclosing that information to you, but isn't quite ready to go to a doctor yet? Maybe it might be worth addressing it again and asking him if he could see a doctor. I'm not sure how it is with theft but I know for other things that are illegal a doctor can't force police involvement. But like I said I'm not clear on how that stands for theft.

Sometimes it takes a little while to get the courage to go to see a doctor, so might it be similar in your friend's case?

I think doctors can only tell the authorities if he was planning to hurt another person or was a danger to other people. For example, a teenager could be using drugs while seeing a therapist but the therapist wouldn't tell the police and I imagine the same rules would apply in this situation. Maybe that would reassure your friend?
