You GP can provide you with a referral and medicare will cover not much but a few sessions I do believe. Also do you have private health insurance?
Not sure your age, but if you are in school - the guidance officer can be helpful, at uni - the counselling services for students are free, some uni's also have a psychology clinic where postgrad students complete their hours in it, and they can be a great way to seek counselling that is far cheaper. By just doing a google search about counselling services in perth, wa you do get several results but I do understand that there is an expense involved.
But yes I would advise starting with a doctor and going from there. If you are in crisis you can also ring Lifeline 13 11 14.
If you are up to it feel free to write about what is happening for you - sometimes sharing it with others can make the intensity not so heightened.
