Help Defining Different Mental Disorders

So I recently did some research and came up with a few different mental disorders that I do not know as much about as I would like. It would be great if y'all could help me better identify what they actually are, their symptoms, etc.

Here are the disorders:
- Social Anxiety Disorder
- Atypical Depressive Disorder
- Dysthymia
- Minor Depression
- Body Dysmorphic Disorder
- Adjustment Disorder
- Avoidant Personality Disorder

If you know anything about any of them, that'd be really helpful. Thanks! :)

From this question, it sounds like you have done some kind of online test? I have to say that such tests are incredibly inaccurate and your best bet is to go and speak to a medical professional - especially if you are finding that your symptoms and how you are coping on a day to day level are concering you.

I will also say that we can not diagnose here, and that you really should avoid trying to self diagnose - This is what going to the Dr and professioanls is for.

I know that their inaccurate, it just seems like stuff that I should know the definitions of.

I think you would probably get more help from this site by writing a little about what sort of difficulties you are experiencing.

One of the reasons on-line tests are dodgy is that even people who are mentally healthy often tick a box or two for each disorder. For example you could dislike parties without having "social anxiety disorder", or be uncomfortable wearing a bikini without having "body dysmorphia."

Are you feeling low or anxious at the moment?

Okay, I edited my question. I just wanna say that I am NOT trying to self-diagnose myself or anything like that. It's really pretty much just curiosity, if y'all had anything you wanted to put out there about any of these disorders.

I think that RYL isn't the best place to get really factual information about disorders and diagnoses for a general knowledge purposes because everyone's experiences are unique and therefore their view of a disorder/ diagnosis is subjective and can't be taken as the whole overarching view. We are however good at providing people with personal experiences if they are experiencing similar symptoms etc which is why you will see threads about specific diagnoses.

In very basic terms - most of the disorders that you questions are their namesake:

- Social Anxiety Disorder - anxiety about socialisation with others in a variety of ways and situations

- Atypical Depressive Disorder - a form of depression that doesn't fit the typical criteria for a major depressive disorder

- Dysthymia - a strain of mood disorder linked with depression

- Minor Depression - mood disorder connected with major depression disorder however the all of the criteria for major depression is not met but there is a significant impact experienced by the symptoms

- Body Dysmorphic Disorder - is a combination of a psychological and body image disorder whereby a person feels that there are aspect(s) of themselves that are defective.

- Adjustment Disorder - a period of time or experience that an individual can not tranisition and adjust with.

- Avoidant Personality Disorder - is a type of personality disorder that centralises extreme anxiety that inhibits any individual from being able to participate in life.

Again this is just a brief, very brief synopsis of what these disorders are, there are plenty of credible sources out there that can give you more information and like others have said if you do have concerns that you might be experiencing on of these it would be best to speak to your doctor to discuss in detail what is happening for you.

life isn't about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself.

Aptyical depression is a subtype of both dysthymia (a mild form of depression) and major depression, characterised by a rise in the mood of the suffering following a positive event. In other words, something good happening makes them feel better, unlike with major depression, where symptoms are persistantly intense, or dysthymia where symptoms are less intense, but consistant.

Adjustment disorder just means distress linked to a clear stressor. It's bascially just a list of codes that a shrink can use when treating someone who is having problems like a recent breakup. It's like the broken leg of mental health, it has a clear cause, and with proper healing will go away.

As the other posters have said RYL isn't the place to get large amounts of information on specific mental illnesses as going onto google will give you the information you need in far more detail than we can provide.

However, generally people join RYL because they are suffering with some form of mental distress and Im wondering if we can help you with that?
