I already work in health care im a hca/carer i work in hospitals/carehomes/peoples houses/secure mental health units. So im not dangurus or anything. i have group DBT to learn skills and its working im half way though, this is weekly and i have a weekly therpy sesion. Im curently on stable medication (anti sycotic and antidepresent). I see my self as stable. I think im jsut trying to justify all this to myself really. Im also classed as morbidly obese though this does not affect me in anyway, i can get to the floor and do cpr i can do moving and handerling i can walk and such. Just this is getting me in such a tizzy now, i havnt left the house in 3 days as i have high anxzity from this and i cant sleep as its my future hanging on by a theread. I dont really know what im asking just has anyone sels gone thtough occupational health or anything?

Hi,
I recently got a job with the ambulance service, so it's not nursing, but still the NHS.
Health-wise I'm also in a very similar position to you, I (supposedly) have BPD and I self-harm. I take an AD and an AP as well as a benzo, I'm also overweight. So, with regards to how the meeting went the discussions will probably go the same way.

I'm assuming you've already filled in the Occ Health questionnaire, if they've got your notes. If you've been honest on that form then the meeting will go a lot smoother, in my opinion, as there will be no surprises for them.

When I had mine they asked me about my treatment, if I felt that it was working, what I would do if things got really bad again (like would I ask for help/tell my manager etc). They asked me if I honestly felt that I was ready to start work. I had also been asked if I could provide a Drs note to say that I was engaging with treatment and that they were happy that I could cope with the demands of the job.

They were actually really lovely. I was super worried about having my height and weight done, but he explained to me that it's just so that they know what it when you begin, should you experience any ill health due to work, and not so that they can judge you/tell you how to live your life.

Luckily I was deemed fit to work, on the proviso that I have six-monthly Occ-Health reviews, oh and one of the questions they asked me was if they would need to make any adaptations for me, like flexi time.

I just wanted to say that Occ Health are there to help you, and to make sure that you are safe at work (as in it's not damaging to you, not that you are dangerous). If they do say it's not the right time, please, please don't take it to heart and let it get you down. Take their advice, use your HCA work to gain more experience and come back to it when things are a bit more stable. It's clear that working in healthcare is something that you're good at, so they're not going to *want* to turn you away. Just be honest, and don't worry, they'll understand your nerves

Best of luck, I'm sorry for the essay, and if there's anything I can do, just PM me.

I just want to wish you the best of luck. I have BPD and a conditional offer for nursing mental health branch at uni. Currently I am waiting to hear back from occ health, so I understand your worrying. Just try and be honest and remember they are only trying to make your life easier. Let us know how it goes Xx

Hi, the background for me is quite different but I have been through OH 3 times regarding my mental health. They have always been incredibly nice and mostly interested in how I was managing my depression/SH - I was worried they would think I was 'dangerous' coz I self harm (I work with children) but their concerns were just for me and whether I was well enough to cope. I was able to describe the help I am getting atm and what I would do if I got worse, and that was really what they were after.

Also, right at the start they told me it was classed as a 'medical assessment' and as such was confidential - I was worried my employers would find out I SH but that would not be able to happen - even if OH decided it was best for me not to be at work, they can't pass on details of the assessment. I found that very reassuring but maybe you are not worrying about that anyway:)

Good luck! I'm afraid I don't know if they would do a drug screen - I have never had one in my assessments nor any sort of physical. But hopefully someone else will know if that's typical. I hope it all goes well for you! Bx

They have a duty of care to you, and so need to meet you to discuss whether there is anything they can do to help you under their duty to make reasonable adjustments (DDA).

The idea is that they can look at things to help prevent any undue stress to you in the workplace and to open the door so that you know them should you have any problems further down the line.

Do try not to worry about it too much. It is standard procedure for anyone who has a condition on their medical records, whether a mental health or a physical one (or, in my case, both).

I'm sorry it went so badly. Do wait for the report though before giving up on it completely. If you disagree with what is said then I'm sure there are ways to challenge it. You could ask to see someone else or offer to get a report from your psychiatrist if she would say that you are fit to do nursing.

I've been through occ health because of studying medicine and I also found them incredibly unhelpful but there are ways round it.

As downside says, see what the report says. You can ask for a second opinion and see someone else, you can also get your Dr and Psych to write a report for you.

Ultimately, you can complain about the appointment you had, as it was clearly not to the standard anyone would hope for.

Try not to loose too much hope, although I know that is hard right now. There are ways around it and you know, within yourself, what you are capable of.

I'm really sorry to hear about that, sounds like you came across a very closed-minded and judgemental person. Which is everyones worst nightmare in such situations. As said above if the report comes back and it is as bad as you think then you can appeal or ask for a second opinion. Always worth it, as it may just be that one a** hole!
Try and keep your chin up, best of luck.

Hi, Im not sure if this will help at all but it cant do any harm. I am about to start my third year on a adult nursing course and one of the girls that I have become good friends with is in a very simular place to you. She has BPD, has self harmed in the past as well as having many other health issues. Without being nasty, she is also very overweight and has never had an issue with any of this. The uni is well aware of all these things and as they are all under control, she has never ever been told that she even would have to consider putting the course on hold or leave so I should think that there will be no issue for you starting the course. She also did work before in the caring role, incuding in a mental health unit. Im sure that you will be fine to start as planned .
There are many, many others on the course also that have active issues with eating disorders, mental health issues e.c.t. Most of the people on this course have some sort of issue in their past and this is why they have joined.
I wish you well on your training and hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Good luck xx
