Advanced decision

I have been asked to write an 'advanced decision'. Has anyone else written one and what sort of things did you write? I'm just trying to fill mine in now...thanks x

I think that's the same as an advance statement in Scotland. Is it where you write how you want to be treated or don't want to be treated if there comes a point where you are admitted to hospital against your will? On mine I just wrote that I didn't want to be given a certain medication because it makes me hallucinate, i'd rather not be given sedating medication, and ECT should be used as a last resort. I hope that helps.

I put it down on paper and then the ghost does not ache so much.

Some people write these into their Care Plan. It is, as stated above, about letting them know what your preferences are should you need care and not be considered capable of making decisions yourself. It can form part of a power of attorney - and in many cases is the best way to make your wishes known.

You should write any things you are very against, such as medications you prefer to avoid, and if you wish someone to be consulted for decisions on your behalf. Also, write if there are things you prefer and find helpful.
