I experience this too when my mood is low, and am not sure I can explain why it happens. Sometimes I feel like there's darkness all around me and that there is an ache in my insides- sadness or anger, perhaps.
What I tend to do if I can is just go and lie down on a bed for a while (if I'm at their house) and maybe talk to myself a little bit to try and comfort myself. Alternatively, I drag a duvet downstairs and lie on the sofa so I feel a bit protected. Distraction can help too, things like reading a book, watching TV or listening to music.
If I am out with them and can't retreat, it can help to let someone know that I am finding things difficult. Sometimes just saying this helps to ease things a bit. If I am in a pub or out elsewhere, I just nip to the loo for a few minutes' break or outside (for a smoke, but I don't suggest starting that!)
Other things which comfort me include a warm bath or shower or a sweet cup of tea.
