Going into an inpatient program

Does anyone here have any advice for me? I've never been to an inpatient program before, (and hopefully won't have to again) but in a month I'll be entering one. It's a month long, and I don't really know what to expect....any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

I'm currently inpatient at the moment, at so hopefully I can answer any questions you have. Pack books, music, things to keep you occupied outside of program times (assuming there is one). Don't be put off by psychiatric units portrayed in the media...
Be prepared to really work at your issues, keeping a journal is always a good idea for reflection and noticingthings you might otherwise not.

I'm not sure what else to say. Any specific questions?

Well, I know there will be writing assignments, and a few role plays where we have to face things, but I don't know what kind of things, prolly whatever we need to deal with. Group time, individual time, and if possible family therapy as well. It's a 7 day a week thing, so I don't know how much time I'll have outside of working on there things, but a journal does sound like a good idea.

I don't know, I'm mostly nervous about the whole thing. What kinds of stuff do you have to work on? Is it what triggers you and why? Or your past? Is it mostly figuring out ways to deal with the urges? Do you have to think a lot about those first things, and go into detail about them?

I know I have to do that eventually, and it'll probably be better for me to do it inpatient, but I'm kinda terrified.

Do the people you're working with seem to understand?

It really depends a lot on the program;what their particular way of approaching things is. You'll find some groups more helpful than others, but keep an open mind andnput in the work and you'll be on the right track.
It depends also on your own issues -why you are there. It is always helpful to know your triggers and signs that your symptoms are worsening, another reason journalling is helpful. They will help you find strategies and healthy coping techniques, and encourage you to explore things.

I have schizophrenia so my issues are dealt with by medication and CBT, it really depends on a lot of things, the unit, what their program involves etc etc.

Sorry. Can't be much more help.
Still happy to answer any questions,

I'm back guys! It was really helpful, and enabled me to gain a lot of insight into myself. I'm really happy I went, thank you for your advice. (And yes, I journaled)

Hey Elly,

Glad to hear it was such a helpful admission and that you gained so much insight. That's great to hear. How are you doing now that you are out?
I'm glad you journaled, did you find it helpful?
