involuntary noise making

when im in uncomfortable scenarios/ feeling really nervous or bothered by voices i make noise but not by choice, like clicking my tongue or humming or just making random consistant noise. Now i used to do this when i was little and a few years ago in horrid stressful events.. but since ive come home from hospital (december-now) which i supposse is reintroducing me into things like going shopping or being outside in general and if im being tormented. I cant cope with crowds or many people at all and i get really stressed sometimes when im being talked too and scared. I also have twitches have so for about a year but i dont think ive got torettes or anything... i just have to do it, it keeps me calm... distracted sort of.. its not optional it just happens often i dont realise im doing it until someone looks at me weird or my mum shouts at me (if im home).

Does anyone relate to this..?

I shake my leg really badly when I feel awkward & I rock back & forth which makes me look totally "insane" (for lack of a better word). I also hum & I can't help it. My psychologist says it's a soothing thing that comes from things we learnt as children that help us feel safe. I also twitch & slap myself really hard in the face when I'm nervous or around people, don't know why - it's just an involuntary thing I do. You're not alone. hug x

It sounds like a form of self-soothing. I have been known to hum and babble to myself and on occasion rock also.

It may be that it is worth talking to your care team to see if there is a way to make the intergration into day to day life less stressful for you and to work on anxiety management to help you build up your coping mechanisms.

I get shaky leg a lot. I also hum, or make a weird noise with my throat a lot. Also have weird movements, like I shrug my shoulders, pull my t-shirt, sniff, twitch my nose, roll my eyes back and grimace/ make a weird face where I stretch my neck muscles. Ive told my psychiatrist and he pretty much ignored me and said it was something I do when I'm anxious, which I already know, because its semi-voluntary, like I get a preminition and an urge, then I do it. Had this when since 11, and its pretty embarrassing, especialy as I do it only at work and when in outside. The noise making is even more so when I'm watching a movie or a lecture, because its really quiet.

I would say It most likely is a comfort thing, but when you say then you started getting twitches...yes it can be stress and other areas.
I can related because I have Tourettes. However, putting that aside, when i have gotten stressed/v.angered i have hit myself and done other behaviours which were not part of my TS.

I wonder, what would like to do next? See someone about this, or find some techniques to help with the effect it has on you?

I have Tourette's and Asperger's Syndrome. When I am outside, I get tics in my neck and shoulders which I really cannot stop sometimes. I also rock and do repetitive movements with my hands and fingers which I do when I am not engaged in a physical action.

But these things get worse for me when I'm anxious. So it most possibly is anxiety for you.

PM me if you want a PDF copy of the ICD-10 or the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. I ALSO HAVE THE DSM-V BOOK and am a pharmacology student.

I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.
I have autism and have problems communicating, PMs included.
Just becasue I type well doesn't mean I speak well. I am only part time verbal.

I know how aggravating it can be hun...
I was literally just diagnosed with Tourette's last wednesday... lol
When i was a kid, i would roll my thumbs, and for a while I did this thing where i stuck my throat out like a bullfrog and made this funny noise...
But about a year ago it got really bad... In the past year, I've started jerking my arm up so that I hit myself in the shoulder, hit my leg, jerk my head to the side or down, squench my eyes shut... I started snapping my fingers once out of nowhere... I sniff sometimes, hum, and I started saying "up" over and over again and it eventually got to where I was practically yellling it...

The movement disorder specialist I'm seeing now said in my first appointment that she thought it could be related to my anxiety n such, but when I saw a psychiatrist where she is at, he said that he thought it was probably more than likely tourette's...

So ya, I totally can relate to that...
