Hey I've just been looking in the tv guide & Embarassing bodies has a teenager on who self harms tonight. Not sure how interesting it will be, but just thought I'd let you all know.
It's on Channel 4 tonight at 9pm.

me too i'd say its probably about scar removal or something along the lines, i'm just hoping that they will be sympathetic? well sympathetic maybe not the right word but at least nice to him/her
wasnt to bad- think it was handled a bit simplistic- he asked her why she had been cutting- well if we could all sum it up in a few sentances that would be great..... but they were nice to her and its good its been raised on a high profile show for awearness :) x

I went to my GP about the Red Cross make up thing and my gp said she cant do anything and that i would have to see them. Though i thought i could be refered
I'm pretty sure you can get referred to the red cross quite easily as I know that Cat (Lungs_Locked_Lips_Locked) has and is quite pleased with the result of their camouflage creams.

Yeah, my GP has repeatedly refused me anything because it's cosmetic and the NHS would say no.
im being referred to plastic surgery at the minute to be honest and my gp was talking about getting skin grafts, and i was thinking here sure i wouldnt be able to get it on the nhs. and he said that it could be a possibility so maybe it depends on were you are based as well.
im in northern ireland and there is only one hospital that does plastic surgery anyway, but i dont no whether or not that should have anything to do with it anyway. but i think that if the scars that you have are having a psycholigical effect on how you are feeling about yourself then it should be allowed on the nhs as its to help you get better.
i am fully prepared for them to say to me look you need to be x amount of years or months or whatever free but even if they were to say that to me it would be great as its a goal.
anyway back to the show i thought it was great to see it being aired though it didnt really have much relevance to me, as they only looked at removing one scar when i have multiple. the make up i thought was okay though it probably looks less noticable up front in real life anyway
I've used the red cross make up service before & it was very good. You can refer yourself via telephone or email, you don't have to be referred via GP/somebody similar. I just telephoned them & told them I had scars I wanted to do something about, I didn't mention self harm.
As for the program, I thought it was good that it raised awareness.

As if you could just walk into your gp and ask for scar removal like that. NHS wont do anything.
This, to be honest. The whole thing kind of annoyed me with his "oh my god that's a huge scar" kind of thing. I dunno, self harm on the telly kind of makes me feel a bit uncomfortable, so that might be influencing my views.
Plus, I wish someone would sort my legs out. Still, good for her for being free.

I think the "omg thats a huge scar" was his way of trying to be nice.
I think we can be too harsh on doctors etc sometimes. Yes, we need them to be sympathetic. But if they have never self harmed then it must be hard for them to know the "right" or "wrong" things to say.
I think he was trying to be helpful and if he said one or two phrases that were kind of awkward then it's only because he doesn't know what to say.
Regardless of whether doctors get enough training about self harm I doubt there is a list anywhere of what (not) to say. Like: don't comment on size of scar. Don't ask about tools. etc.

i completly agree definatly about time it was shown up in public not many people know what its like even my boyfriend is like "why would you keep doing it to yyouself?" and i have been with him 5 years so yeah no one knows unless they go through it too! x
