Pressure Pressure Pressure

I am 21, I live at home and have BPD but my parents don't seem to care about mental health. I work for my parents too so that makes life and work quite hard and the lines are incredibly blurred.

Anyway the problem is my mum KEEPS pressuring me to learn to drive etc and she keeps getting everyone else involved.

If and when I want to learn to drive, I should be able to choose the time!!

But she keeps saying she will help pay for the car or insurance but she doesn't get it!!

First off I love spending all my money on my DVDs, games, books etc - I don't want to spend it all on stupid rent or car tax or insurance. ****s sake!!

Firstly, depending on your BPD and how bad it is, then you may not be able to drive anyway. The DVLA do revoke licences in terms of mh problems or decide not to give one.

I would speak to a medical professional (preferably your psych if you have one) before applying for the provisional licence. They can tell you if you can or cannot drive. If you cant, then they should help you apply (by writing a supporting letter) for a bus pass.

As for that, if you cant drive, I would then talk to your mother. If you are classified as medically unfit, then that may shut her up.

The car issue aside, at some point in your life you'll have to pay rent.

I know :( and I mean I do pay my parents rent - but part of me just doesn't want to get older - I would rather go back to being a kid.

I missed that. I totally agree. Even if you are able to move out and are able to claim housing benefit, some of your money will go on electric, water and gas bills. Plus TV licence and probably the internet. There is no way you will be able to spend all of your money once you move out on games etc. There is always gonna be bills and there will be serious consequences if you dont pay.

I hate if this sounds like I am agreeing with your mum, but if you are earning some money (whether it be a job or benefits), some of it should go to your mum. Even if it is £10 a week (may be more, depending on what you and your mum both agree upon), it will prepare you for later life. At some point you will be moving out and it wont be so much of a shock to your system.

I'm not adversed to paying rent - I give her £370 a month.

..... I would love to have parents that encourage me to drive. Mine have told me I shouldn't drive and actively encourage me not to.

£370 is a fair amount to pay, but is still a lot less than a normal household bills. Maybe save for something larger - to show your Mum that you can chose to spend in a different way and that it is just that you do not want to learn to drive just yet.
