support for depression and study

Hi all,

I'm new to this site, my issue is I've got a couple exams in the next few weeks, and I'm finding it incredibly hard to study with my depression. I'm sure you know how it goes, poor concentration/focus, lack of motivation etc. I just feel I'm facing an impossible task even though I've somehow done it in the past.

If anyone has any tips on how they deal with studying with depression I'd be forever greatful.

I can relate, although thankfully I'm doing a home learning course so can take it at a more steady pace.

Do you have particular times of day that you find harder than others? It might be an idea to come up with a study plan, bearing in mind the hardest parts of your day - and avoid them. Also, try doing it in small bouts rather than expecting yourself to concentrate for a long time.

Is there a tutor you can speak to about this? They may be able to help too.

Thanks for your reply :) Late arvo/evenings are the best times I can focus, so maybe I can try doing some house cleaning and exercise in the mornings and save my (attempted) study time for later in the day.

I agree with you that studying in small bouts is more realistic and manageable, like taking short breaks every 45mins or so. I just have so much course work to revise and get through. If I can build myself up gradually to the longer study days, and maybe for now just start slow and like you said study in small bouts.

I got my final exams deferred due to my depression getting the better of me this semester. I'd feel like a slacker seeing my tutors now when everyone else is on holidays and finished with the course

Thanks again for sharing and good luck with your studies!

Setting yourself a good time-table with enough breaks, making sure to still eat and sleep enough.

Build treats and breaks into your work plan - There is nothing better than reaching a study break mile-stone and putting on a good movie or going out and it gives a little motivation boost to have something more immeditately attainable (chocolate or sweets are wonderful for the smaller in between goals).

It can also help to be creative as much as possible with study. If it helps to use coloured pens then go for gold on them and use them.

Most importantly (from much experience) is to not be too hard on yourself and allow yourself to feel tired or fed up at times. It is natural for anyone studying, especially for things like exams.

Best of luck.

Roiben has some really good advise.

I think it's important to not beat yourself up if your having a bad study day and always make sure tomorrow is a new day.

Google revision tips and work out which ones sound like they will work for you - eg if you cant concentrate could you make mind maps? Or if you have a phone that you can record on or dictaphone speak your revision into it and then listen to it whilst doing your housework say!

Depression does make study harder but getting a good routine going really will help
