CPN
Hey, I went to see my psychiatrist today & he said he would refer me to a CPN with my permission. I said yes.., just wondering what to expect at 1st appointment? What does a CPN do? x

*hugs* To be honest I can't remember what happened at my first appointment-- I've had CPNs for about 10 years now.
Currently my CPN comes to me once a week and takes me out for coffee, as I don't like leaving the flat alone. We talk about the past week, how I'm coping, what I'm struggling with (I have an ED and I self harm).
Good luck with it, in my experience cpns seem to be really nice :)

I know CPN's are meant to see you once a week (usually) just to have a chat and see how you are doing, they can help you with issues such as housing or benefits etc.
Mine is absolutely useless, but I know people who have very good ones who help. x

not necessarily mine sees me like every three weeks i think, i think it probably depends on how busy they are and like the area that they have to cover as my cpn before that just covered my town (i think) but then she went on study leave or something and now i have to see a different one and travel further to see her.
i think that they basically just offer you support and are in contact with your psych as well im not really sure cant remember to be honest what the first appointment was like. im sure that she will no some of your history though she might ask you some questions regarding how you are feeling at the present time. though im not 100%sure

On my first appointment she told me she had no information on me so it was basically another assessment. I haven't seen her again, it's been about 6 weeks :L But I think the idea is they're someone you catch up with more regularly and talk about a wide range of things.

With my cpn- who was amazing. She saw me once a week or if i was struggling she would see my more then once a week. First appointment... if i remember rightly - i zoned on for most of the time. She asked about my sh and other questions she told me the od i had taken could have killed me and that i was lucky ; I was refered to her for an od though i was with CAMHS at the time. So yeh about my SH told me who she was that she was my cpn , what her name she asked what i wanted to get out of seeing her. Mainly a backgroud history and what was going on in my life, it was another assessment really Se then asked me to wait outisde while she spoke to my parents. Though the at time due to be zoning out an most of the questions wenr in one ear and out the other i didn't know she was my cpn until a good few months as i wasn't listening. Though i had spoken to a lot of different people in that week including, my parents, doctors, nurses, consultants, soical worker/ crisis team and then my cpn. lol

A CPN is a community psychiatric nurse and as such they tend to see you more regularly than your psychiatrist this can be anything from weekly to monthly depending on the level of support you need at the time.
I have a social worker instead of a cpn and whilst I cant remember the exact details of my first appt it was just a getting to know you type thing.
Since then she has helped me with practical stuff e.g. sorting out benefits and helping me with my housing situation. she liases with the psychiatrist so if she thinks I need to see him she will get me to see him, she has also done some practical work with me e.g. looking at reducing my self harm.
