Winterbourne View Hospital exposed, shocking cruelty and violent staff

An undercover panorama investigator has unearthed shocking evidence of cruelty beyond words at a private hospital in Bristol which deals with young people who have learning disabilities, personality disorders, and other complex needs.

Quote:
Just a few feet in front of me, Simone cowered in the corner of the shower, her arms over her head to protect her from the care workers who had dragged her, fully clothed, beneath the jets of water.

At the time they took my silence for acquiescence, occasionally leering in my direction as they tossed shower gel at the 18-year-old, who has learning difficulties, and threw mouthwash into her eyes.

But there was a good reason why I didn’t intervene: what these thugs didn’t know was I had a secret camera hidden in the buttonhole of my shirt and was recording every second of their barbaric behaviour.

Having gone undercover as a care home assistant, I was torn between my instinct to protect the whimpering young woman in front of me and my desire, as an investigative journalist, to ensure I had enough evidence on film to bring her tormentors to justice.

But the moral dilemma I faced here was nothing compared to some of the horrors I witnessed during my five-week investigation.
Even as an experienced journalist working undercover for BBC’s Panorama, I was deeply disturbed by the things I saw at the state-of-the-art Winterbourne View private hospital in Bristol.

Seven months earlier, Panorama’s producers had been approached by a whistleblower who worked there, alleging terrible malpractice at the £3,500-a-week hospital for adults with learning disabilities and autism. It is the modern equivalent of Britain’s Victorian asylums.

Shocked by what I’d been told, I decided to apply for a job there to see first hand what was taking place.

Once I had secured a position, one of my first tasks was to complete a course on how to restrain difficult and disturbed patients.

I prepared myself psychologically for what I might see, but within two weeks of starting my £16,000-a-year job I’d witnessed chaos and abuse worse than anything I’d expected.

The article is too long to post here so please read the rest of it here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...d-society.html
I simply cannot believe that in this day and age such cruelty and violence can exist in hospitals which are supposed to be places of care and safety for vulnerable people.

Makes me sick reading this.

Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money.
They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with.
Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I'm watching this at the moment, and it's absolutely shocking. I've worked in homes for people with learning disabilities and cannot imagine anything like this. The residents I worked with were the loveliest, sweetest people imaginable - yes their behaviour was sometimes challenging but there was ALWAYS a reason for it that you cold find and sort out without going anywhere near the sort of tactics used by those staff. I am so angry about what's happening there. It's horrible.

I watched it, completely vile.

what i found really disturbing is that Wayne (the head guy) would stroke simones hair when he pinned her down, I just find that bizarre how he can be being so cruel but then comforting, urgh.

It shocks me that people are shocked. It's been this way for so many years now... nothings changed. Nothings changing. It's just better covered up. It's disgusting.

I think it's easy to think this doesn't happen any more as we don't see it very often now because it's hidden so 'well'. It's horrific, and a horrible thing to be going on behind the scenes and I really hope that programmes like this will keep being aired until something actually happens.

i just watched it what uuter appalling people they deserve criminal.convictions disgusting people and at the end when they're asking that poor boy how he felt about that place it actually caused him distress or some negative emotion just thinking about it. it was heart wrenching when watching the family watch footage and when the girl cries for. her sum seeing her mum face oh god i was crying on and off throughout i cannot describe. my disgust at these people i know it happens far too much to be real but its still so shocking seeing it i feel this way in general to such people there its no excuse and i hope they get their fair share of karma even though i felt he should have stepped in reporter or not but i know he needed to capture it but if it was me i wouldn't be able to hold back id be in the staffs face for such ruthless cruelty and then moving in to stop as much as possible until the police did something and the staff were gone i wouldn't be able to leave them with such horrible people to be honest with this footage they should just have been fired not suspended as they have out right evidence.
