telling my gp im suicidal - what will she do?

im seeing my GP tomorrow she knows things have been really bad recently. that ive been thinking about suicide and tomorrow shes going to ask me how i am...the thoughts etc..

what will she say/do if i tell her that yes i am suicidal, i have plans and honestly dont care anymore. everything i ever saw the point in trying for has gone. i dont want to be here and i know im going to do something.

can she admit me to hospital?
what will she do/say?

ive been in hospital in the past but its always been after ive attempted to kill myself.

the last time i was in hospital i was sectioned - does that make it more likely that they will admit me again?

just need some clarification before i see her tomorrow.

thanks.

I am not sure what your GP will do, but I think you are doing the right thing.

I guess it depends on your GP and what exactly you say. I have been whilst actively taking ODs of my prescription medicine and nothing has happened. I think it is better to be honest and see what happens as it could help.

hopefully your gp will be supportive and let you talk.
clinically speaking they tend to try and asses how much of a risk you are to yourself and ask questions like do you have a plan? do you have means to carry out plan? etc.
i don't know about hospital or not, but she will just try and keep you safe and may discuss differnet options to do so.

i think telling her is a brave thing to do and a good idea.
thinking of you x

I've been in this position a few times. Be honest with her - I'm a firm believer in being honest, even when it is embarrassing/uncomfortable to do so, with medical people.

As for what she will do..it depends on what you say. For instance, if you say you feel like taking an OD of your tablets, what they did with me was offer me the option of having the home treatment team round. What they did was send a nurse/ot round who held my pills and came round for a chat and to make sure I took them, without leaving me with lots.

Likelihood is that you will be offered hospital - if you are really in danger to yourself, take it. You'll have better privileges/be out sooner.

If you seem totally determined and reject any help at all...that is when they will think of sectioning you. But bear in mind that it is hard to section someone, so you'll be offered voluntary admission before that!

When I told my GP I was suicidal, she sent me to the crisis team, who looked after me for a few days at home and then admitted me to hospital. They will just assess your risk level, which seems quite high, and discuss possible treatment options. Hope it goes okay for you.

Technically, you can be sectioned for three days by your doctor on an emergency section (I think it's s.5(1) but not completely sure). However, in practice, I think they will refer you to a crisis team and look at other options first.. if you come across as hellbent on doing it, I guess they can force you into hospital then.
