What's with all the spam lately?

I don't ever remember there being this much spam on RYL......Is it just not being caught right away, or what? Some of it is kind of amusing, yet it can be a little annoying, I guess....*shrug* Just an observation.

I think we'll always get SPAM. It irks me too.
PR them? Hopefully someone of the moddies will get online soon and remove them.

I know what you mean. Spam is quite annoying.

There was an incident just this morning where I came across a spam thread in the ED forum (I think it was about software for your iPhone or something like that) and I PMed Shambles about it. Apparently it's been taken care of because I went back to the ED forum and the thread isn't there anymore. I have to admit, I did get kind of angry when I saw the thread even though I didn't show it. I just couldn't help but think "This is a place where people go to give and recieve help, there are people here who are really suffering at the moment, and all you care about is advertising your stupid iPhone software?" It's just...meh. Irritating.

*Sigh* Not much that can be done about it though. Except to keep reporting it.

Better question, why do I have to wait a minute between reports.
And why does it say that it's sending an email, when the reports make a post in modforums? *mods somewhere else, knows this stuff*

Im not sure why we have more spam lately, we try and deal with it as quickly as possible although sometimes it can fall to the wayside if there is a more pressing matter. Although spam is annoying its not usually harmful in the way that say, flaming is.

Well....its not necessarily a better question, just different.....theres a minute between PRs to stop us from getting doubled post reports, say if the page is loading and someone keeps clicking the button. Im not sure about the email thing....I dont think thats much of a big deal surely?

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.

I have noticed it more recently and it's a bit annoying but I just PR and move on. There are other posts that deserve to be looked at more than the spam so it's best if they are just ignored. They're not hurting anyone, just something that is mildly irritating and should be watched and kept an eye on.

It makes me super-angry, but I agree, not really hurting anyone. Will I get infarction points if I hurl abuse at advertising trolls?

In the past the mods were able to limit access to ryl from the spammers subnet

I must have you!"

It's not a huge deal, i just thought it was an odd error message and wasn't sure if it was an incorrect one

It says email, I think because at one point all the mods used to get an email alert every time a report was sent.

Oh yeah, for sure. Though some I've come across have misleading titles and I think they're actually something interesting/of importance, then I click on them and feel like and idiot. lol

You know, if you just hover the arrow over the thread title, it comes up with the first few lines of the post so that you dont have to go to the effort of actually clicking it if it looks boring. :)

If any of the mods are seeing regular spam from particular IPs / subnets, please let me know and we can block the idiots at our firewall. We generally keep IP blocks in place for a least a couple of months and this is normally long enough for them to move on...

Take care,
James

It always tickles me when people reply to the spam post, saying something like "um, I don't think you meant to post in here" - it's like no, it's spam, of course they weren't supposed to :P

Spam is silly. Down with spam!

And Woods of Wonderland, I find it quite useful when reporting posts if it tells me I've done it in the last minute - I sometimes don't know whether my report worked or not, so it's useful for me, anyway. Also, it does stop double reporting.
Whenever you report a thread, the mods used to get an email alerting them to the thread. It doesn't work like that now, but that's why it says it.

There does seem to be a big increase in it lately.

Although it does seem quite human spam and not random computer-generated, for instance the one about increasing the pleasure of my sex life was in the vets forum, not general :p

I saw a spam post the other day.

I think if someone would have replied with what that said to me, I would have broken down!

I dont get how people create spam on RYL? Like do they have to join and stuff and then just post random rubbish, or what :S

Yeah, they do have to join, the same as anyone else really. Then they are free to make as many posts as they like until one of the mods bans their account.

Honestly, the one you're talking about really hit me too. I can't believe it would get posted, spam or not!
